dayye
I'm trying to find the name of a song about New York City from sometime in the late 70's or early 80's, when NYC had sorta gone to the dogs. Can't remember enough words to even do a lyrics search, but it was about NYC as a one beautiful lady now done on her luck, sung as a sort of metaphor ballad. Sorry for the vagueness, I mainly remember it evoking a feeling of sadness and loss. Any leads will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

_Laurie_
Angel Of Harlem by U2 is what I thought of at first, but that was late 80's I think...

Shawna
but.... it's not actually what I thought of. Angel of Harlem is about Billie Holliday (sp?)... Still, I'm all for agreeing with my other 2/3rds.
dayye
No, it's neither Billy Joel or U2. my dim recollection is that it had a quieter sound, very melodic, but thanks a lot. Please keep the suggestions coming.

dayye
Laurie - thanks, but that's not it. (BTW, I really enjoyed the use of Mona Lisa & Mad Hatters in the Life on Mars series finale.) Edna - thank you, also. I'm working my way through the list, but nothing rings a bell yet. Perhaps I'll have a reverse senior moment one of these days & remember enough of it to do a lyrics search. dayye
Laurie - I think the Life On Mars DVD is coming out this fall - the music alone would be reason enough to get it but toss in Jason O'Mara & Harvey K...! I'd taped the episode that ended with 'Whiskey in the jar' & 'my Maria' and must have replayed the ending half a dozen times just for the sheer joy of the music and O'Mara's mugging in the bar scene. It's by the Stones (with added random Shadoobies thrown in), and it's called.... "SHATTERED" Uh-huh, shattered (Shadoobie) Shattered, shattered Love and hope and sex and dreams Are still surviving on the street Look at me, I'm in tatters! I'm a shattered Shattered (Shadoobie) Friends are so alarming My lover's never charming Life's just a cocktail party on the street Big Apple People dressed in plastic bags Directing traffic Some kind of fashion Shattered (Shadoobie) Laughter, joy, and loneliness and sex and sex and sex and sex Look at me, I'm in tatters I'm a shattered Shattered (Shadoobie) All this chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter 'bout Shmatta, shmatta, shmatta -- I can't give it away on 7th Avenue This town's been wearing tatters Shadoobie, shattered, shattered (Shadoobie) Work and work for love and sex Ain't you hungry for success, success, success, success Does it matter? (Shattered) Does it matter? I'm shattered. Shattered (Shadoobie) Ahhh, look at me, I'm a shattered I'm a shattered Look at me- I'm a shattered, yeah (Shadoobie) Pride and joy and greed and sex That's what makes our town the best Pride and joy and dirty dreams and still surviving on the street And look at me, I'm in tatters, yeah I've been battered, what does it matter Does it matter, uh-huh Does it matter, uh-huh, I'm a shattered (Shadoobie) Don't you know the crime rate's going up, up, up, up, up To live in this town you must be tough, tough, tough, tough, tough! You got rats on the west side Bed bugs uptown What a mess this town's in tatters I've been shattered My brain's been battered, splattered all over Manhattan (Shadoobie) Uh-huh, this town's full of money grabbers Go ahead, bite the Big Apple, don't mind the maggots, huh Shadoobie, my brain's been battered My friends they come around they Flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter Pile it up, pile it high on the platter

_Laurie_
I heard this one today and thought I would post it ..... Just in case... Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) ( Christopher Cross ) (1981) Once in your life you find her Someone that turns your heart around And next thing you know you're closing down the town Wake up and it's still with you Even though you left her way across town Wondering to yourself, "Hey, what've I found?" When you get caught between the Moon and New York City I know it's crazy, but it's true If you get caught between the Moon and New York City The best that you can do ...... The best that you can do is fall in love Arthur he does as he pleases All of his life, he's mastered choice Deep in his heart, he's just, he's just a boy Living his life one day at a time And showing himself a really good time Laughing about the way they want him to be When you get caught between the Moon and New York City I know it's crazy, but it's true If you get caught between the Moon and New York City The best that you can do ..... The best that you can do is fall in love When you get caught between the Moon and New York City I know it's crazy, but it's true If you get caught between the Moon and New York City The best that you can do .....
