Songs with cussing

Being an old punk-rocker, I could name quite a number. The very first that sprang to mind was "So What?" by The Anti-Nowhere League (which has since been covered by Metallica, fact fans)

This begins with a loud, bellicose sneer of "So f*****g what?"

From the relatively harmless first verse

"I've been to Hastings, I've been to Brighton, I've been to Eastbourne too",

"So what? So what?"

"I've been here, I've been there, I've been every-f*******-where"

"So what, so what, so what, so what, you boring litle c**t", the lyric becomes ever more littered with flagrantly offensive language. (Examples:

"I've f****d a sheep, I've f****d a goat, I've had my c**k right down its throat"

("so what? so what?" etc.)

"I've sucked sweets, I've sucked rock, I've even sucked an old man's c**k"

...and so on.)

In defence of the "artist"; the song is a put-down of the type of irritating pub-bore, who tries to gain kudos from his male peers by boasting about his macho (and - presumably- largely imaginary) exploits. As such, apart from dismissing the guy as a "boring little c**t", most of the foul language can be attributed to the tedious and unimpressive bore for whom the contempt is intended. Hence, the song is effectively saying "there's nothing big, clever or impressive about what you're saying, so why don't you shut it?". In so doing, our narrator clearly occupies the moral high-ground, albeit in a rather uncouth manner.

"So What" - a pounding punkerama of pseudo-Pistolian proportions- sold enough to make the top 10 of the UK indie chart in ...ummm....1982, I think. It was a double A-side, also featuring a storming rendition of Ralph McTell's "Streets Of London". I was one of the lucky people who bought the single before it was banned on account of its offensive content.

That's a broad topic  Almost every band in the known world has a swearword thrown in somewhere in their song catalogue. Anything we can use to narrow the playing field? Like - a lot of curses? or swearwords that appear unexpectedly in the lyrics? Or scandalous song titles?

"Why d´you do it" - Marianne Faithfull.

There´s lots of songs bleeped... Since Amy Winehouse´s "Back to Black" till Wayne/Jayne County "If You Don´t Wanna... " I can think of so many that I just don´t know if that´s what you´re looking for... .p

‘Cussing‘ is swearing ? (asks a non-native speaker of the English language).

The F* word is used by Alanis Morissette, in You Oughta Know: ‘Are you thinking of me when you ***** her‘.

And I remember vividly my astonishment in 1973 when I saw printed in a Dutch (!) popmusic magazine the lyrics of the Rolling Stones song Star Star:

‘You‘re a starbucker, starbucker, starbucker, starbucker,star....‘ .

Never no more bought the magazine ever, after that.

"You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morrisette. Rumor has it that the Grammy academy wanted to revoke her award when they "discovered" it had the F-word in it. And at the Grammy show where she performed it live, she refused to bleep out the word, and instead the folks in charge of the 3-second delay had to handle it.

Broken Hearts Are for A**holes by Frank Zappa off his Sheik Yerbouti album

Then the Rolling Stones gave Decca Records this song in the early '70s...here's from Kenos Rolling Stones site

C*cksucker Blues

"This song was given to London/Decca Records in 1970 by the Stones for their final single that they owed the label. London/Decca refused to release it. It was released in 1983 in West Germany on the album The Rest of the Best as a bonus single, but then dropped from the album after just 4 weeks of it's release. Features only Mick and Keith, but there is a bootleg of the song out there with the entire band playing on it, recorded sometime around the mid 70s."

Vocal: Mick Jagger Acoustic Guitar: Keith Richards

C*cksucker Blues

(aka Schoolboy Blues)

(Jagger/Richards)

Well, I'm a lonesome schoolboy

And I just came into town

Yeah, I'm a lonesome schoolboy

And I just came into town

Well, I heard so much about London

I decided to check it out

Well, I wait in Leicester Square

With a come-hither look in my eye

Yeah, I'm leaning on Nelsons Column

But all I do is talk to the lions

Oh where can I get my c*ck sucked?

Where can I get my a** f*cked?

I may have no money,

But I know where to put it every time

Well, I asked a young policeman

If he'd only lock me up for the night

Well, I've had pigs in the farmyard,

Some of them, some of them, they're alright

Well, he f*cked me with his truncheon

And his helmet was way too tight

Oh where can I get my c*ck sucked?

Where can I get my a** f*cked?

I ain't got no money,

But I know where to put it every time

I'm a lonesome schoolboy in your town

I'm a lonesome schoolboy

Then there's:

The End by The Doors

This is the end

Beautiful friend

This is the end

My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end

Of everything that stands, the end

No safety or surprise, the end

Ill never look into your eyes...again

Can you picture what will be

So limitless and free

Desperately in need...of some...strangers hand

In a...desperate land

Lost in a roman...wilderness of pain

And all the children are insane

All the children are insane

Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

Theres danger on the edge of town

Ride the kings highway, baby

Weird scenes inside the gold mine

Ride the highway west, baby

Ride the snake, ride the snake

To the lake, the ancient lake, baby

The snake is long, seven miles

Ride the snake...hes old, and his skin is cold

The west is the best

The west is the best

Get here, and well do the rest

The blue bus is callin us

The blue bus is callin us

Driver, where you taken us

The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on

He took a face from the ancient gallery

And he walked on down the hall

He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he

Paid a visit to his brother, and then he

He walked on down the hall, and

And he came to a door...and he looked inside

Father, yes son, I want to kill you

Mother...i want to...f*uck you

Cmon baby, take a chance with us

Cmon baby, take a chance with us

Cmon baby, take a chance with us

And meet me at the back of the blue bus

Doin a blue rock

On a blue bus

Doin a blue rock

Cmon, yeah

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end

Beautiful friend

This is the end

My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free

But youll never follow me

The end of laughter and soft lies

The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

And the second punk ditty that sprang immediately to mind- but which I didn't have time to post yesterday, due to all the asteriskery involved- was Crass' "Do They Owe Us A Living?"

"F**k the politically minded, here's something I want to say,

About the state of the nation, the way they treat us today.

At school they give you sh*t, drop you in the pit,

You try, you try, you try and get out, but you can't because they've f**ked you about.

Then you're a prime example of how you must not be.

This is just a sample of what they've done to you and me.

Do they owe us a living?

Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?

Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?

OF COURSE THEY F**KING DO.

They didn't want me anymore, cos I threw it on the floor.

Used to call me "sweet thing", now I'm nobody's plaything,

And now that I am different, they'd love to bust my head,

They'd love to see me cop-out, they'd love to see me dead.

Do they owe us a living?

Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?

Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?

OF COURSE THEY F**KING DO.

The living that is owed to me, I'm never going to get,

They've buggered this old world up, up to their necks in debt.

They'd give you a lobotomy for something you ain't done,

They'll make you an epitome of everything that's wrong.

Do they owe us a living?

Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?

Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?

OF COURSE THEY F**KING DO.

Don't take any notice of what the public think,

They're so hyped up with T.V., they just don't want to think.

They'll use you as a target for demands and for advice,

When you don't want to hear it, they'll say you're full of vice.

Do they owe us a living?

Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?

Of course they do, of course they do.

Owe us a living?

OF COURSE THEY F**KING DO.

There: about as succinct a critique of our f****d up society as you will ever find.

N.B. These lyrics might not be 100% accurate, as they're off the top of my head, rather than copy/pasted.

Believe it or not the album versions of these Adult Contemporary standards all contain curses:

Boulevard of Broken Dreams-Green Day:

"Read between the lines what's

F***ed up and every things all right"

Makes Me Wonder-Maroon 5

"And it really makes me wonder

If I ever gave a f**k about you"

And the granddaddy of all shock-rock:

You're Beautiful-James Blunt :o

"She could see from my face that I was

F***ing high"

I think those 3 songs are the only songs that made it to number 1 on the charts that contain the F word, but I could be wrong about that.
