cyberjudge
After pinch hitting last week, Cincuenta y Cinco asked me to step in again to recap Top 40 #7. So let's get to it. 5 songs drop out again this week: Shakin' All Over by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, Sleep Walk by Santo & Johnny, It's All in the Game by Tommy Edwards, La Bamba by Ritchie Valens, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford. That makes room for 5 new songs: Leading off at #40 is the first hit on this chart from Motown Records, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, with Shop Around. At #38 is 1 of 3 songs on this week's countdown by the songwriting duo of Carole King & Gerry Goffin, The Loco-Motion, by Little Eva. (Which are the other 2? I'll let you guess for now and give you the answer later on in the countdown. ) At #36, the duo of Mickey & Sylvia make their first appearance on the chart with Love Is Strange. Debuting at #35 is Be-Bop-a-Lula by Gene Vincent & his Blue Caps. And the highest new entry this week at #29 is the signature hit for Buddy Holly, That'll Be the Day. The 5 songs making the biggest jumps this week are: Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry, up 16 notches from 37 to 21 Surfin U.S.A. by the Beach Boys, up 13 spots from 30 to 17 Summertime Blues by Eddie Cochran, movin up 12 from 40 to 28 The Lion Sleeps Tonight by the Tokens, up 8 slots from 39 to 31, and Only the Lonely by Roy Orbison, also gaining by 8 from 33 to 25 There is only 1 new song in the top 10 this week, as Be My Baby by the Ronettes, last week's highest debut, slides up 4 notches from 13 to 9, knocking out Since I Don't Have You by the Skyliners, which slips from 10 to 11. But before we get to the top 2, the answer to our trivia question: The other 2 Goffin-King compositions in this week's chart are Take Good Care of My Baby by Bobby Vee at #22 and Up on the Roof by the Drifters at #8. And on we go: At #2, shooting up 5 spots in Travelin' Man by Ricky Nelson. And that brings us to #1 ... for the 2md week in a row, the #1 song on the countdown is: All I Have to Do Is Dream by the Everly Brothers That's all for this week's countdown. Until next week, keep your head in the stars and keep reaching for the ground.

OLD 55
For sure Phil. In Australia, we just never heard the 'black' originals of many great songs that were covered, and taken into the Pop Charts, by white artists. I've really gotten into R & B since I retired and started seeking out these originals. I have quite a few Atlantic and Motown compilations.
