Seeing that TT50 list inspired me to nominate another song that had also been nominated that week:

A Change is Gonna Come-Sam Cooke (1964)

It seems all the you tubes I can find of Sam Cooke's original have been deleted due to copyright restrictions, however I am posting a video from Barack Obama's inauguration concert performed by Bettye LaVette & Jon Bon Jovi.

And the only song that can go with it is the song that inspired "A Change", and a riveting performance by a legendary singer prominent in Obama's campaign:

The song written and recorded by Shuggie Otis, but the Bros. Johnson version is a definite case of "cover even better than the original".
