Ooh, I see some late action for the Stone Roses. Going Down is my fave Roses' song. Just a B-side, but so very very lovely.

And did I see a vote for Aimee Mann in there somewhere? Woo hoo!!

Actually, with those last few votes, I think every track might now have at least one vote. the Warumpis, Richard Hell (best song title ever), th'Dudes...

As for my country leanings, I can't deny it. I've done my time at the world famous Tamworth Country Music Festival ;-)

Thanks all,

So, how is the quiz coming along? Glad you asked...

Okay these one have been completely answered:

2. Which two feature Robert Quine?

Phil says Matthew Sweet and Richard Hell. YES! And I would also accept Scritti Politti!

3. Which one has Tom Petty on guitar?

MindCrime got that one... Dwight Twilley.

5. Which one is written by Stevie Wright?

I think Katie got this one. Stevie Wright did not write the Steve Wright song, but he did co-write Sorry for the Easybeats.

6. Which two are written by "Flash and the Pan"?

Edna half got this. Vanda and Young did wrte Evie for Stevie Wright, but they did not write Sorry for the Easybeats (Vanda wasn't yet writing). Katie knew that they wrote Yesterday's Hero for John Paul Young.

7. Which one is produced by Thomas Dolby?

J, our resident Prefab Sprout fan, knew that Dolby produced their Two Wheels Good/ Steve McQueen album.

9. Which one was covered as a single by Iron Maiden?

Chris knew that this was Women In Uniform, a very uncharacteristic single for Australian icons Skyhooks. Much better than the cover.

10. Which one was covered as a single by the Screaming Jets?

J got this one. Shivers, by Melbourne legends Boys Next Door.

11. Which one features five members of the Byrds?

Edna knew, and so did Cyberjudge. Gene Clark was a founding member of the Byrds, and when he was down, his former bandmates helped him out on a few tracks.

15. Which one comes from an album that was named for a George Orwell (mis)quote in the U.S., but after an American actor in the England?

J, an acknowledged Sprout affectionado, got this one. The album was Steve McQueen in the UK, but Two Wheels Good in America.

17. Which one of these features Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, Larry Mullens Jr and Steve Earle?

MindCrime knew that Emmylou Harris had all these people helping out for her cover of this Lucinda Williams classic.

18. Paul Kelly (one of the acts here) directly borrowed from one of the other songs here when writing "Have you ever seen Sydney from a 747 at night?". Which song did he borrow from?

Yes indeed, Phil. Paul Kelly nicked the opening line of the Flatlanders' gem Dallas. As Kelly acknowledges in the last line... "Me, I've never seen Dallas from a DC9."

19. Which one was covered as a single by Elvis Costello?

J got this one too. Costello's first album of covers included the single Good Year For The Roses.

20. Which of these artists is the only guest musician to ever get a line of dialogue in Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Yes, it was Aimee Mann who said "Man, I hate playing vampire towns!" I think that I got this one, but Levis and others tried real hard.

These have been partially answered:

1. Which two of these are written and sung by Paul Westerberg?

Well, we know that one is the Replcaments (thanks Mindcrime), but what is the other?

4. Which two feature Richard Lloyd?

J Hill said Television and Richard Hell, but that's only half right. Lloyd was not in the Voidoids, although Richard Hell had been in Television. Very confusing! So what's the other act with Richard Lloyd on guitar?

... and these ones are still completely unanswered:

8. Which one is written and sung by a very young Nick Cave?

I don't think we've had an answer for this one. One of these acts is the first flowering of Nick Cave, and eventually morphed in the Birthday Party. Any takers?

12. Which one of these acts covered a song written by one of the other acts on a famous film soundtrack?

Oh I thought this one would be easy. This song is one of the most famous covers of recent years, but for this very famous movie, it was covered yet again. So, what was it, and who covered it? The writer and the singer are both on this list.

13. Which one of these acts features a star of U.S. daytime soap opera?

No takers for this one yet? He's an Australian guitarist turned singer turned actor, and very successful at all of them. And he's stupidly good-looking too.

14. Surprisingly, only one of these featrues the musical saw. Which song is it?

I don't think we've had an answer for this one. This song was originally released in 1972 on 8-track cartidge only, and at first it didn't do very well. Was the musical saw or the 8-track the problem?

16. Which one of these features the singer from another of these on guitar?

A bit tricky, this one. J had a good go at it with Television, but it comes down to Matthew Sweet yet again. That guy had EVERYBODY in his band, including the highly literate singer songwriter from another of these acts. Who was it?

Thanks everyone!

Yes yes yes. THat's a mighty guitar riff from Rick Springfield on that record. And it's right up there with the best-ever covers of a Beatles track. A pity the chorus is a little weak, but the verse with that riff is monstrously huge.

Well done, MindCrime!

MindCrime is going off!! He now has the Westerberg and soap star questions. (I LOVE that Grandpaboy song. It's the closest thing I've heard to the classic 1970 Rolling Stones sound in many a year.)

But what about the musical saw? It sounds just like a theremin, but it's much more reliable.

1. Strong - Robbie Williams - 1998

Ooh yeah, that is embarrassing, isn't it? I love that song. You can hear that Robbie had been hanging out with the Gallaghers, shedding the boy band taint. Those first two solo albums are the most enjoyable guilty pleasure of the last decade.

Thanks!

Great lyrics in that song. Classic self-mockery from the biggest ego in the business:

My breath smells of a thousand fags

And when I'm drunk I dance like me dad

I'm starting to dress a bit like him.

Early morning, when I wake up,

I look like Kiss but without the make-up.

Hey, that's a good line to take it to the bridge...

A shame that the USA never really discovered him.

Hey, that's a surprise winner!

I could certainly learn to like that Top Ten. They're all fantastic, in fact. There are even a couple of Australian songs that made it (and they're both sung by the same guy). You'd never know that I'm a country boy, though.

I'm looking forward to seeing the numbers...

THanks everyone!
