Tenacious_Peaches
1] Raising Hell - Run-D.M.C. 2] Woman in Me, The - Shania Twain 3] Trans-Europe Express – Kraftwerk 4] Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley 5] Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys 6] Silver Apples - Silver Apples 7] Superfuzz Bigmuff – Mudhoney 8] Catch a Fire - Bob Marley & The Wailers 9] (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) - Lynyrd Skynyrd 10] Are You Experienced? - The Jimi Hendrix Experience Dang, this was hard. I really tried to go with the definition of groundbreaking and had to leave off stuff that I love deeply. I had to leave off Michael Jackson, for hell's sake. And I lurve me some MJ. blind-fitter
1) Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth 2) Complete Recordings, The - Robert Johnson 3) Are You Experienced? - The Jimi Hendrix Experience 4) Blue Lines - Massive Attack 5) Sonic Youth - Sonic Youth 6)Silver Apples - Silver Apples 7) Trans-Europe Express - Kraftwerk 8) Stone Roses, The - The Stone Roses 9) Surfer Rosa - Pixies 10) F♯A♯∞ - Godspeed You Black Emperor! Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys Revolver - The Beatles... ...all deserve to be there on the grounds of their ground-breakingness; moreso than some of the stuff in my 10. How do you strike the balance between ground-breakingness and personal preference? In the end, I thought: all nominations were groundbreaking in some way or another, whether I like them or not, so I'll just select "the ones I'd most like to listen to". (Then again, there were a couple I would enjoy listening to (more than stuff I voted for), but couldn't vote for, because I simply couldn't see anything groundbreaking about them at all.) Getting them in order is a challenge, too. To be honest, I haven't listened to the Robert Johnson album I put at #2, but in the overall scheme of things, he's the grandaddy of'em all. Similarly, I would probably liaten to my #4 - #10 before I would listen to "Are You Experienced?", but,in terms of groundbreakage, inspiration and influence, it's streets ahead of most of the competition. Anyway: too much analysis already.

cyberjudge
Beatles and Elvis in their rightful place as the 2 greatest influences of all time. Great move by MC to nom Buddy Holly at the last minute, and it paid off big time. And of course I'm happy about Pet Sounds.

edna
Of course ... but nominating a Beatles album other than Sgt. Pepper's ... now that's groundbreaking! Of course Sgt Peppers was "the" groundbreaking album... but as I said in my post: I think the obvious would be Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Yet I´d rather nominate ..."REVOLVER"... It was a first step into not-so-pop/not-so-easy music. Sgt Peppers would come later with its psychedelia, but REVOLVER was the intro. When I heard Sgt Peppers for the first time -I was 11 or 12 - I somehow expected a surprise, I knew there was not going to be anymore "yeahyeahyeahyeaaaaaaaahs"... because I had heard Revolver one year ago and that was the album that shook me. Very good list... those albums are a must.

c_s_1987
Great list. My main issue is that Dark Side Of The Moon came ahead of In The Court Of The Crimson King. That just doesn't really make sense to me. I don't think DSotM really broke much ground that wasn't already broken by Pink Floyd's previous albums, King Crimson, The Beatles, Procol Harum, ELP etc etc.

DSOTM was the album that made PF a star. An amazing album, of course, but it´s mostly a sort of commercial work in the sense that it made them famous worldwide. Lucky
Okay folks, you know what time it is. Along with the good (making the list), comes the bad (the homework). We need a short paragraph or so from the nominators of the winning albums for the blog. I can imagine this topic stirring quite a bit of discussion (where is this one .... I can't believe you forgot that one! ). So, there are 9 individuals that need to put their thinking caps on .... 9 because Mr SmartyPants MindCrime got both his nominations on the list. edna karma Seeker MindCrime (2) bluesboy Lea TimLizzy cyberjudge Martin We need the above individuals to submit their thoughts on their winning nominations. We could take bits from your nomination, but then you run the risk of Martin & myself picking your words, and cutting & editing .... I know you'd prefer to do that yourself! Hop to it, kids! edna
OK, here I go: Released in the Summer of 1966, with a disturbing art cover by Klaus Voorman, Revolver showed the rising of a new style. A first step into pyschedelia. An album with sounds from India melting with Motown style, a childish melody or a nice enchanting tune, tabla and harsh electric guitar, piano or maraccas, simple love songs or tripping lines, "Revolver" told the world pop music was going to take a deep turn only one year later.
