The Songfactors' Choice: Groundbreakers

I think "Revolver" is a totally new concept. I prefer "Rubber Soul" or The White Album (not Sgt Peppers) but the sound and the effects in Revolver, compared to the amazing pop in Rubber Soul  announced something new... ;)

I remember I was a bit disgusted with it... I was 11 but I expected some sweet rock... then, when Sgt Peppers was released, I found it so poppy...

Trans-Europe Express ~ Kraftwerk (1977)

Side one

1. "Europe Endless" (Ralf Hütter, Florian Schneider) – 9:35

2. "The Hall of Mirrors" (Ralf Hütter, Florian Schneider, Emil Schult) – 7:50

3. "Showroom Dummies" (Ralf Hütter) – 6:10

Side two

1. "Trans-Europe Express" (Ralf Hütter, Emil Schult)1 – 6:40

2. "Metal on Metal" (Ralf Hütter) – 6:52

3. "Franz Schubert" (Ralf Hütter) – 4:25

4. "Endless Endless" (Ralf Hütter, Florian Schneider) – 0:55

It's not their first album, it wasn't even their most commercially succesful one, but I think it's Kraftwerk's most important album.

While their precursors "Autobahn" and "Radio-activity" were a bit more experimental, this here is a round, fully electronical listening experience, influenced by classical music, catchy repeated melodic themes and vocoded vocals make for a hypnotic (in a good sense) experience.

The title track is, similarly to 'Autobahn', made to let you feel like you're on a train ride. From station to station / back to Dusseldorf City / Meet Iggy Pop and David Bowie (who both lived in Berlin at that time and were good friends of the band).

But besides these two the record has had a tremendous influence in the following decade's music. Without it there would be no electronic music as we know today, from synth-pop to house and techno.

fun fact: this is one of only 2 (!) albums by non english speaking artists in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" (the other being "Buena Vista Social Club")

and at the end we'll listen to some hip-hop :shades:

If it's not too late to change my vote, I'm going to drop ZoSo as one of my nominations and replace it with ...

The "Chirping" Crickets ~ Buddy Holly & the Crickets (1957)

d80325wh9ok.jpg

Track Listing (Composers)

1 Oh, Boy! (Petty, Tilghman, West)

2 Not Fade Away (Holly, Petty)

3 You've Got Love (Orbison, Petty, Wilson)

4 Maybe Baby (Holly, Petty)

5 It's Too Late (Willis)

6 Tell Me How (Allison, Hardin, Petty)

7 That'll Be the Day (Allison, Holly, Petty)

8 I'm Looking for Someone to Love (Holly, Petty)

9 An Empty Cup (And a Broken Date) (Orbison, Petty)

10 Send Me Some Lovin' (Marascalco, Price)

11 Last Night (Mauldin, Petty)

12 Rock Me My Baby (Heather, Long)

"The debut album by the Crickets and the only one featuring Buddy Holly released during his lifetime, The "Chirping" Crickets contains the group's number one single "That'll Be the Day" and its Top Ten hit "Oh, Boy!." Other Crickets classics include "Not Fade Away," "Maybe Baby," and "I'm Looking for Someone to Love." The rest of the 12 tracks are not up to the standard set by those five, but those five are among the best rock & roll songs of the 1950s or ever, making this one of the most significant album debuts in rock & roll history, ranking with Elvis Presley and Meet the Beatles.", (All Music Guide)

After the death of Buddy he would leave a trail of followers from Bob Dylan, to Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, and The Beatles. Also, one of The Rolling Stones early hits was a cover of "Not Fade Away". (Wikipedia)

[color:navy]Blue Lines - Massive Attack (1991)

2ij57jc.jpg

A fusion of electronic music, hip hop and dub music, the album established Massive Attack as one of the innovative British bands of the 1990s and the founder of trip hop's Bristol Sound. The city of Bristol, consisting of a large working class, became the epicenter of the trip hop movement. The album incorporated sounds of hip-hop, 70s soul music and reggae.

Massive Attack approached the American-born hip hop movement from an underground British perspective. It was customary to have a two turntables and a microphone, but this album incorporated live instruments and vocals over haunting melodies.

Everyone should know Unfinished Sympathy.

Then there's Safe From Harm

and a cover of William DeVaughn's Be Thankful For What You Got

Blue Lines was the world's first trip-hop album. It came out before the word trip-hop existed.

So Massive Attack got the ball rolling and now we have Portishead, Tricky (ex-Massive Attacker), UNKLE, Thievery Corporation, Morcheeba, Ruby, Bjoerk and so on. We also have the genre 'trip-hop'. That's pretty cool. And groundbreaking

How many votes do we have?

our usual Ten :)

and as Radhi already wrote, Massive Attack are an English band, who started the at that time called "Bristol Sound", or 'trip hop' as it's called today

... it's a bit hard to explain what exactly that is, just listen to "Unfinished Sympathy" to get the idea... :)

btw, is that song in the regular TT already?

1- Revolver - The Beatles

2- In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson

3- Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley - who can deny this?

4- Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys

5- Hair - The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical - a real revolution...

6- Tommy - The Who

7- Transformer - Lou Reed - the first "Adult Orientated Rock-glam" album

8- Bringing It All Back Home - Bob Dylan

9- Trans-Europe Express - Kraftwerk

13- Surfer Rosa - Pixies

14- Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd - had it been "Atom Heart Mother" or "Meddle"... I would have voted for it... Of course, I love DSOTM... but...

I didn´t vote for my fave albums but rather for the most "groundbreaking". Of course, I should have listed Dylan and Hendrix higher... and "Saturday Night Fever" deserves to be in that list just as Thriller or Surfer Rosa.

But, again, you know...

I think this list deserves a countdown:

10. Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley

9. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

8. Blue Lines - Massive Attack

7. Are You Experienced? - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

6. Silver Apples - Silver Apples

5. F♯A♯∞ - Godspeed You Black Emperor!

4. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull

3. In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson

2. Tommy - The Who

1. Revolver - The Beatles

I really struggle to find words to explain how incredibly groundbreaking and influential Revolver was. Tommy isn’t too far behind, but Fin already mentioned the reason I can’t put it at #1 – S.F. Sorrow.
