elie
how did james dean influence rock and roll? Edited September 23, 2008 by Guest title
Farin
do you mean the music? or rather the rock and roll "lifestyle"? I think, if at all, his influences lay more in the latter than in the former
edna
Interesting... Blue jeans, rebel without a cause...? He died in 1955, the year rock and roll was born. I have no idea, really... I just thought maybe he reincarnated in rock and roll... Edited September 21, 2008 by Guest
bazooka
At song1.com, a lyric search for the phrase "James Dean" turned up 41 songs -- mostly Rock, but some Country as well. That might be a place to start.
Lucky
It seems to me that aside from obvious direct lyric references, it's a connection to the whole rebellion thing. I think that the youth of the time connected to his image of rebellion, as much as they connected with rebellious image of rock n roll, and everything sort of fused together. Mike
James Dean, James Dean I know just what you mean James Dean, you said it all so clean And I know my life would look allright If I could see it on the silver screen You were the lowdown rebel if there ever was Even if you had no cause James Dean, you said it all so clean And I know my life would look all right If I could see it on the silver screen We'll talk about a low-down bad refrigerator, You were just too cool for school Sock hop, soda pop, basketball and auto shop, The only thing that got you off was breakin' all the rules James Dean, James Dean So hungry and so lean James Dean, you said it all so clean And I know my life would look all right If I could see it on the silver screen Little James Dean, up on the screen Wond'rin' who he might be Along came a Spyder and picked up a rider And took him down the road to eternity James Dean, James Dean, you bought it sight unseen You were too fast to live, too young to die, bye-bye You were to fast to live, too young to die, bye-bye Bye-bye, Bye-bye, Bye-bye, Bye, bye

bluesboy
I agree with Lucky, James Dean was part of the cool crowd the kids of the '50s could identify with.
Shawna
and then again, he made a definite fashion statement. I mean, just check out Bruce on the cover of "Born In The U.S.A." and you'll agree.
