Taxi Driver

On a damp sidewalk underneath a dim streetlight

Stood the last fare of the night

I pulled over, and she opened the door

She said "take me to interstate 94"

Through the rain cascading down my windsheild

I could see the glow from the signs we pased

As we gradually escaped the cities cold steel arms

I broke the silence and asked

Her name

Highways are longer than our lives

Our cars last longer than our souls.

When the horizon is finally underneath us

They disappear behind us with the meanings

of the words we didn't learn til we were old

We got to talking about philosophy

As the fury from the storm outside crashed down on the trees

She spoke like she knew my deepest fears

She said I spoke like I've known her all these years

We passed exit after exit

I asked her where should I get off

I turned around, she didn't make a sound

But with her eyes she told me any choice was fine

Highways are longer than our lives

Our cars last longer than our souls.

When the horizon is finally underneath us

They disappear behind us with the meanings

of the words we didn't learn til we were old

I'm not gonna pretend that my life is bad

I'm not gonna pretend that I'm always sad

I left her standing in the rain on the shoulder of a blind curve

She said if I needed her again I would always know where to find her...
