The Songfactors' Choice Top Ten #131

I listened to December - first time I had heard the song - and could only understand the word "don't" throughout. At one point I considered it might be a non-English language song. It's the "Joe Cocker Syndrome," where familiarity with the song is a definite plus because the singer does not reveal all the words.

I got to thinking ... it was stated in a recent Creative Writing thread that poets or other writers should indicate a strong comprehension of grammar, spelling and punctuation, in order to be most effective. Does it then follow that better singers should have the ability to better transfer lyrics through pronunciation and diction? Or like abstract methods of writing, is it simply licensed expressing interpretive through non-traditional expression?
