Aunt_Acid
Does anyone know the original lyrics to this song? The story goes that some singing group, I forget their name, was performing and the lead singer forgot the words, so covered it up by singing the now-famous na na na na na na part. Trouble is, I haven't been able to find the first lyrics to that portion of the song anywhere. Shall the answer forever remain a mystery? Hopefully Muzik will see this post. He seems to know everything.
bazooka
Lots of potential leads on the Land of 1000 Dances page (<). Chris Kenner is the writer. His own version reached number seventy-seven in the charts. Allen Toussaint recorded the song in 1962. [both those should have the lyrics intact] Frankie Garcia of Cannibal and the Headhunters tells the story of forgetting the words. [That "na-na-na-na" version and Wilson Pickett's are the ones I'm familiar with]
