Songs About Breaking Up

Recommended Posts

I wanted to start a thread listing songs that are not neccessarily "break-up" songs, but more songs about people breaking up. I find these can sometimes be touching, but more often find greatness in their irony or humor.

For example, "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You" by the Ramones, which, simply enough, goes:

"I don't wanna walk around with you

I don't wanna walk around with you

I don't wanna walk around with you

So why you wanna walk around with me?

I don't wanna walk around with you

I don't wanna walk around with you"

Other exapmles includue "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" by the Magnetic Fields, and the rock standard "Hey Joe."

Goodnight Goodnight ~ Hot Hot Heat

I've given up on social niceties

I threw 'em out when I threw out your keys

Along with all your records I can't stand

You never even listen to any one of them

You're never gonna drag me out again

With all the people that were never ever even your friends

So here it is - your final lullaby

Goodnight, goodnight

You're embarrassing me

You're embarrassing you

So goodnight, goodnight

Walk away from the door

Walk away from my life

So goodnight

Song for the Dumped

by Ben Folds

So you wanted to take a break

Slow it down some and have some space

Well f*** you too!

Give me my money back

Give me my money back, you b****

I want my money back

Wish I hadn't bought you dinner

Right before you dumped me on your front porch

Give me my money back

Give me my money back, you b****

I want my money back

... and don't forget my black T-shirt

You Oughta Know

Alanis Morissette

I want you to know, that I'm happy for you

I wish nothing but the best for you both

An older version of me

Is she perverted like me

Would she go down on you in a theatre

Does she speak eloquently

And would she have your baby

I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able

To make it enough for you to be open wide, no

And every time you speak her name

Does she know how you told me you'd hold me

Until you died, till you died

But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you

Of the mess you left when you went away

It's not fair to deny me

Of the cross I bear that you gave to me

I'm here to remind you

of the mess you left when you went away

it's not fair to deny me

of the cross i bear that you gave to me

you, you, you ought to know

You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful

I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know

Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity

I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner

It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced

Are you thinking of me when you f*** her

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able

To make it enough for you to be open wide, no

And every time you speak her name

Does she know how you told me you'd hold me

Until you died, til you died

But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you

Of the mess you left when you went away

It's not fair to deny me

Of the cross I bear that you gave to me

You, you, you oughta know

Cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me

And I'm not gonna fade

As soon as you close your eyes and you know it

And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back

I hope you feel it...

Well can you feel it

And I'm here to remind you

Of the mess you left when you went away

It's not fair to deny me

Of the cross I bear that you gave to me

You, you, you oughta know

To articulate the obvious:

The Break Up Song -- Greg Kihn Band

We had broken up for good

Just an hour before

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

And now I'm staring at the bodies

As they're dancing 'cross the floor

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

And then the band slowed the tempo

And the music gets you down

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

It was the same old song

With a melancholy sound

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

They don't write 'em like that anymore

They just don't write 'em like that anymore

We'd been living together for a million years

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

But now it feels so strange out of the atmospheres

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

And then the jukebox plays a song I used to know

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

And now I'm staring at the bodies

As they're dancing so slow

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

They don't write 'em like that anymore

They don't write 'em like that anymore

Mmmm, now I wind up staring at an empty glass

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

Cos it's so easy to say

That she'll forget your past

[smaller]Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah, aaah[/smaller]

They don't write 'em like that anymore

No, they just don't write 'em like that anymore

They don't write 'em like that anymore

They just don't write 'em like that anymore

They just don't, no, they don't, no no, uh-uh

They just don't write 'em like that anymore

They just don't

I'm Gonna Miss Her by Brad Paisley

Well I love her

But I love to fish

I spend all day out on this lake

And hell is all I catch

But today she met me at the door

Said I would have to choose

If I hit that fishin' hole today

She'd be packin' all her things

And she'd be gone by noon

Well I'm gonna miss her

When I get home

Right now I'm on this lakeshore

And I'm sittin' in the sun

I'm sure it'll hit me

When I walk through that door tonight

Yea I'm gonna miss her

Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite, Alright

Now there's a chance that if I hurry

I could beg her to stay

But that water's right

And the weather's perfect

No tellin' what I might, catch today

So I'm gonna miss her

When I get home

But right now I'm on this lakeshore

And I'm sittin' in the sun

I'm sure it'll hit me

When I walk through that door tonight

Yea I'm gonna miss her

Oh, lookie there,Another bite

Yeah, I'm gonna miss her

Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite

Do Me A Favour - Arctic Monkeys

Well the morning was complete.

There were tears on the steering wheel dripping on the seat,

Several hours or several weeks,

I'd have the cheek to say they're equally as bleak!

It's the beginning of the end, the car went up the hill,

And disappeared around the bend, ask anyone they'll tell you that.

It's these times that it tends,

The start to breaking up, to start to fall apart

Oh! hold on to your heart.

Do me a favour, and break my nose

Do me a favour, and tell me to go away

Do me a favour, stop asking questions

She walked away, well her shoes were untied,

And the eyes were all red,

You could see that we've cried, and I watched and I waited,

'Till she was inside, forcing a smile and waving goodbye.

Curiousity becomes a heavy load,

Too heavy to hold, too heavy to hold.

Curiousity becomes a heavy load,

Too heavy to hold, will force you to be cold.

Do me a favour, and break my nose

Do me a favour, and tell me to go away

Do me a favour, stop asking questions

And do me a favour, and ask if you need some help!

She said, do me a favour and stop flattering yourself!

How to tear apart the ties that bind, perhaps f*ck off, might be too kind,

Perhaps f*ck off, might be too kind.

Dolly

RCPM

Hello Dolly

Yes, hello Dolly

Now I'm mighty glad you’re back

Where you belong

Dolly

Here's a song, Dolly

But if it were up to me I'd send you home

Well it gets worse, Dolly

Another verse, Dolly

Well how many more bad things can I say about you, Dolly

Get a clue, Dolly

La, la, la, la, la, la, la

Well the holidays were good to you

And you got everything that you wanted too

And I really hope to God all of your wishes come true

'Cause it's over between me and you

So the next time you’re around, stay

Next time you’re around, stay

Next time you’re around, stay away

Dolly stay away

Dolly stay away

Well hello Dolly

Yes hello Dolly

You know I' m

Really really glad you’re back where you belong

But you know, if it were up to me I'd send you straight to

Holidays were good to you

And you got everything that you wanted too

And now I really hope to God all of your wishes come true

'Cause it's over between me and you

I hope all that my wishes come true

Stare at the cracks, when there's nothin' to do

So the next time you’re around, stay

Next time you’re around, stay

Next time you’re around, stay away

Dolly stay away

Dolly stay away

Dolly stay away

edna, i've been in the breeze for a while, but i always knew i'd come back.

i left a kid who cared too much about the velvet underground and who wouldn't listen to anything after 1982--and have now come back chock full of incredible 90's albums and the knowledge that you can never care too much about the velvet underground.

I've Found Someone Of My Own-The Free Movement

I got up this morning

While I was having my coffee

My woman came in, sat down by my side

With tears in her eyes

She said 'I've a confession to make.'

I said 'Woman, speak what's on your mind.'

She said 'I've found somebody new

To take your place.'

'I said don't feel so all alone

I've found someone of my own.'

'All those lonely nights

You left me all alone

My true love would call

And talk to me on the phone.'

I said 'Woman, if that's the way it's gotta be

Then darlin, don't you worry about me.'

She said ' I've found somebody new

To take your place.'

'I said don't feel so all alone

I've found someone of my own.'

I got up from the table

Reached down and wiped the tears

From her face

I put out my cigarette

Turned and walked away

She said 'I've found somebody new

To take your place.'

'I said don't feel so all alone

I've found someone of my own.'

Harry Nilsson - You're Breaking My Heart

You're breakin' my heart

You're tearin' it apart

So fu*k you

All I want to do

Is have a good time

Now I'm blue

You wanna boogaloo

Run down to Tramps

Have a dance or two--ooh!

You're breaking my heart

You're tearin' it apart

But fu*k you

You're breakin' my heart

You're tearin' it apart

Ooh!--ooh!--

You stepped on my ass

You're breaking my glasses too

You wanna drive my car

Buy a lot of stuff

I've had enough

Of you--ooh!

I'm goin' insane

There's no one to blame

So fu*k you

You've gotta have your way

There's nothin' left to say

There's nothin' left to do--ooh!

You're breakin' my heart

You're tearin' it apart

So fu*k you

You've gotta have your way

There's nothin' left to say

There's nothin' left to do--ooh!

You're breakin' my heart

You're tearin' it apart

But I love you

"Over" by Mailani Makainai and Lei Melket

I havent seen you for a while

where you been around this time

I miss your loving arms, and your charming smile

why did you chose to leave me behind

maybe you'll come back to me somehow

maybe things are to stay this way

I miss that love connection now

baby there's just one thing that I have to say

are, are we really over

and are, are we really through

and wont, wont you come on over

cause I, I wanna be with you

now I'm kickin' it with my girls

all night out just having fun

I was a fool to think that you were my world

but now I know that you werent the one

maybe you'll come back to me somehow

maybe things are to stay this way

I miss that love connection now

baby there's just one thing that I have to say

are, are we really over

and are, are we really through

and wont, wont you come on over

cause I, I wanna be with you

I thought you said you loved me

why do you treat me this way

dont tell me that you're sorry

this is the last thing im gonna say

I guess, I guess were really over

I guess, I guess were really through

so dont, dont you come on over

cause' I wont be with you

you, you-ooo

you, you you-ooo

no, no, no I cant wait

no, no, no its too late

From Keahiwai's 2001 debut CD, "Local Girls," which has a number of breakup songs. :beatnik:

Kayleigh - Marillion :(

Do you remember chalk hearts melting on a playground wall

Do you remember dawn escapes from moon washed college halls

Do you remember the cherry blossom in the market square

Do you remember I thought it was confetti in our hair

By the way didnt I break your heart?

Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart

So sorry, I never meant to break your heart

But you broke mine

Kayleigh is it too late to say Im sorry?

And kayleigh could we get it together again?

I just cant go on pretending that it came to a natural end

Kayleigh, oh I never thought Id miss you

And kayleigh I thought that wed always be friends

We said our love would last forever

So how did it come to this bitter end?

Do you remember barefoot on the lawn with shooting stars

Do you remember loving on the floor in belsize park

Do you remember dancing in stilettoes in the snow

Do you remember you never understood I had to go

By the way, didnt I break your heart?

Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart

So sorry, I never meant to break your heart

But you broke mine

Kayleigh I just wanna say Im sorry

But kayleigh Im too scared to pick up the phone

To hear youve found another lover to patch up our broken home

Kayleigh Im still trying to write that love song

Kayleigh its more important to me now youre gone

Maybe it will prove that we were right

Or ever prove that I was wrong
