In Thunder Road, Bruce Springsteen sings:

The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves

Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays

Roy Orbison singing for the lonely

Hey that's me and I want you only.

He refers to Only the Lonely, Roy Orbison's hit from 1960, I think.

In Golden Earring's Radar Love the lyrics mention a Brenda Lee hit:

The radio`s playing some forgotten song

Brenda Lee`s: "Coming on strong".

Radar Love, on its turn, is mentioned in Rocking Horse, by Bad English:

Golden Earring¹s on the radio

"Radar Love" is coming through

A recent example of a song mentioning a song is All Summer Long, by Kid Rock:

And we were trying different things

We were smoking funny things

Making love out by the lake to our favorite song

Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinking 'bout tomorrow

Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long

Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long.

John Lennon mentions 3 songs in How Do You Sleep:

So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise

You better see right through that mother's eyes

Those freaks was right when they said you was dead

The one mistake you made was in your head

Ah, how do you sleep?

Ah, how do you sleep at night?

You live with straights who tell you you was king

Jump when your momma tell you anything

The only thing you done was Yesterday

And since you're gone you're just Another Day

Ah, how do you sleep?

Ah, how do you sleep at night? .

Any other examples of songlyrics mentioning other songs?

I spent half an hour looking for the thread "Songs that refer to other songs", and finally assumed I'd read it on another forum, before I discovered Songfacts.

There is even a group of songs that mention other artists on Songfacts!

Excusez moi!

Let me then add another one: Barclay James Harvest's tribute (?) to The Beatles: Titles.

The long and winding road that leads to your door

Here comes the sun it's alright people shout for more

But were you trying to deceive telling me

All you need is love to succeed

Across the universe one after nine 'o' nine

I got a feeling for you blue and I feel fine

I tried so hard to make believe that I'd see

All you need is love to succeed

CHORUS:

Lady Madonna let it be

Something in the way you moved me yesterday

All you need is love so they say .

Luke Haines song "Discomania", which features on his "The Oliver Twist Manifesto" album and as the opening track on his soundtrack for the film "Christie Malry's Own Double Entry", begins with the line "They're having sex to the Kids In America", referencing Kim Wilde's debut hit. Personally, I think it's a chuffing great line with which to open an album.

Elsewhere, (on his album "Off My Rocker At The Art-School Bop" to be precise"), in the song "Bad Reputation", Haines refers to a hit single by glam-popsters The Glitter Band in most glowing terms: "Goodbye My Love", it's a hell of a record..."

can't believe I didn't think of this song earlier:

You Were Right ~ Built to Spill

You were wrong when you said

"Everything's gonna be alright"

You were wrong when you said

"Everything's gonna be alright"

You were right when you said

"All that glitters isn't gold"

You were right when you said

"All we are is dust in the wind"

You were right when you said

"We are all just bricks in the wall"

And when you said "manic depression's a frustrating mess"

You were wrong when you said

"Everything's gonna be alright"

You were wrong when you said

"Everything's gonna be alright"

You were right when you said

"You can't always get what you want"

You were right when you said

"It's a hard rain's gonna fall"

You were right when you said

"We're still running against the wind"

And "life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone"

You were right when you said

"This is the end"

Do you ever think about it?

Do you ever think about it?

Do you ever think about it?

Do you ever think about it?
