I would be interested in how you find that one - I have it myself and wasn't too impressed with it :P

I liked it. It definitely wasn't as good as "Konk", but it had some pretty cool tunes on it..."Eddie's Gun", "See The World", "Ooh La" and, of course, "Jackie Big T*ts" were my favorites.

That happens to a lot of bands, though. Their debut is relatively average, but then they hone their skills a little, slow down on the booze and dope, start to take it more seriously, and then run up a string of pretty good albums.

(Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Duran Duran, U2)

I prefer them to the ones that have one huge-selling debut album, and then everything after that pretty much bites.

(Cyndi Lauper, Rick Springfield, Hootie and the Blowfish, The Doors)

I don't know their first album, so I could only compare it to other British 'Indie' Rock bands I know :P

but I certainly agree that generally bands who have more than one good album are better than 'one album wonders' (not that they necessarily suck or something) ;)

thanks for reviewing it though

I don't know their first album,

Yes, you do. "Konk" is their second album. The riffs are better, the words are better, but that singer still has that same whiny, British voice. I recommend you give it a listen. The first nine songs are all pretty good. "See The Sun", "Do You Wanna", "Mr. Maker", "Shine On", "Love it All" all have a Kinks-type feel to them. I love it all, love it all, love it all, love it all.

I forgot to mention last week that I picked up albums by Daft Punk and Gorillaz for a pound apiece.

Today's charity shop bargain- with which I am already feeling pretty chuffed- is a CD called "Acupuncture Amphitheatre" by the little-known and long-forgotten band Gretschen Hofner. This also set me back the measly sum of £1 (approximately the cost of 4 cigarettes).

None of you will ever have heard / seen GretschenHofner before, so why don't I share the pleasure?

"Betty Page Is Back"

" A Judy Garland Life"

I was in the town centre today and seized the opportunity to pop into my favourite local independent record shop - Jumbo Records - ostensibly to purchase two tickets for a forthcoming Luke Haines gig.

While in there, I couldn't resist a spontaneous purchase: Bill Nelson - "Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam".

Bill Nelson, formerly of 70s art-rock combo Be Bop Deluxe, is now a highly-revered figure in the field of innovative, electronic / ambient music. He did some interesting stuff in the late 70s / early 80s with Bill Nelson's Red Noise, and under his own name, when his music was right at the cusp of art-rock, post-punk and electronic experimentation. This "Quit Dreaming..." CD is a re-issue of one of his most influential and critically-lauded albums, with additional bonus tracks, including "Youth Of Nation On Fire" and "Rooms With Brittle Views", which I enjoyed listening to on the John Peel show all those years ago.

This purchase cost me £6.99, but I'm sure it'll be worth it.
