invisible_r
The female half of the moldy peaches, Kimya Dawson is not exactly a new artist. With two Moldy Peaches albums and three (I think) solo albums, she is one of the important names in the "anti-folk" scene. you may have come across her music in the Juno soundtrack. I just bought her latest solo venture, "remember that I love you" and I'm loving it. here's her myspace page. "loose lips" is one of the songs from the juno soundtrack by the way. Here are the lyrics from the song "competition" I never wanted to be better than my friends I just wanted to prove wrong the people in my head the ones who told me I'd be better of dead the ones who told me that I would never win when I delivered newspapers they said I was too slow when I was a barista they said I made lousy foam when I worked in retail they said I was a slob much too dumb for school and much too lazy for a job so I rode my bike like lightning and I made cappuccinos that would make the angels sing took two showers a day and I dressed up like a princess shook my fist in my own face and said I'll show you who's the best I wrote the kinds of papers teachers hang up on their walls I was employee of the month at seven different shopping malls and one time playing football I pulled the tendons in my leg to prove that I was tough I hopped on one foot and finished up the game I thought if I succeeded I'd be happy and they'd go away but first thing in the morning I'd still wake up and I'd hear them say "you're fat, ugly, and stupid, you should really be ashamed no one will ever like you you're not good at anything" and sometimes I'd rise to the challenge but other times I'd feel so bad that I could not get out of bed and on the days I stayed in bed I sang and sang and sang about how crappy I felt no realizing how many other people would relate now people send me emails that say thanks for saying the things they didn't know how to say and the people in my head still visit me sometimes and they bring all of their friends but I don't mind I play my guitar like lightning when I sing I like it when you sing too loud and clear different voices different tones all sayin' "yeah, we're not alone" I got good at feeling bad and that's why I'm still here
Farin
^ here's a youtube vid with that song I just listened to Underground, Loose Lips and Competition (see link) I really like her of course that's not too surprising since one of her ex-bandmates from the Moldy Peaches is Adam Green ()
invisible_r
glad you liked it I was a little disappointed with adam green's solo stuff though, i much prefer jeffrey lewis to him
Farin
I don't think I know Jeffrey Lewis and Adam Green is one of the few US musicians that is much bigger in Germany than in the English speaking music world... even though his newest album doesn't seem to be very good, the two before that (Jacket full of Danger and Gemstones) are very cool *ahem* back to Kimya Dawson there are four more full length tracks on last.fm
Batman
I've only heard her songs on the Juno soundtrack, but I didn't really like them. Most of her songs on the soundtrack sounded pretty much the same, and they just sounded like sort of cutesy background music to me.

invisible_r
I understand, I didn't think everyone would approve, I think it's a sort of weird taste!

Batman
I can totally understand what people like about her though. I like how simple and straightforward it is. It's just too boring imo.
skybluesky
Sorry, but I can't stand Kimya Dawson. She may not like you either. I liked the song that has the line "I never met a Toby that I didn't like." Personally I've met only two Tobeys, and I like them both.
invisible_r
I would say that it's mostly about the lyrics
Lambchop Flansburgh
I saw Kimya at an in-store performance in Seattle and she was very charming. Shy at first, but then she brought her 10 year old nephew onstage to sing with her. I like a lot of her stuff, especially "I Like Giants," which isn't in Juno. The funny thing about this success from the soundtrack is that Kimya had pretty much decided to get out of music and raise a family. She's working on an album for little kids at the moment, which seems pretty appropriate for her. My only problem with her is her fairly constant use of scatological terms, but you can't deny the power of a lot of her lyrics. Again, not for everyone, but very emotionally moving if you're into her style. I can't agree with the "boring" comment though. Obviously someone who hasn't listened to very many of her songs.
