RockyRaccoon Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 I did something I never thought I could do. I made a list of my top 100 favorite albums of all time. I felt tired once I had finished it. Feedback is always appreciated, I'd be interested to hear what some of you have to say about the list.
TheLizard Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 You've inspired me. I'm gonna start working on mine. On an entirely unrelated note, I'M GOING TO SEE PAUL FREAKING MCCARTNEY TONIGHT!
RockyRaccoon Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 On an entirely unrelated note, I'M GOING TO SEE PAUL FREAKING MCCARTNEY TONIGHT! You lucky man. I've given up on trying to see him, I've accepted the fact that I'll never be able to see him before he dies.
TheLizard Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 Shut up, he's never going to die. And I've pretty much got my list done. I'll post it sometime within the next few days. It's funny, no matter how varied my overall tastes may be, my favorites will always be rock and roll.
TheLizard Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 And here's the list: http://listmoz.com/#BLRrfQmPhbSjbbQ0by
RockyRaccoon Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 Oh man. Tons of pre-90s stuff. Good list though.
TheLizard Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 Yeah, it's weird how classic my top 100 turned out. Although I guess not, because that's the stuff that's always been there for me. Also, I think Paul McCartney changed my life.
Carl Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 Last night at the All-Star Game, "Sweet Caroline" was played back-to-back with "Enter Sandman." Here's how it went down: Neil Diamond, in tribute to Boston, performs "Sweet Caroline" in the middle of the 8th inning (when it is always played at Fenway). As soon as he's done, "Enter Sandman" blares over the speakers, signifying the entrance of Mariano Rivera, who is being honored as the greatest relief pitcher of all time in his last season. So you had a Red Sox tradition followed by a tribute to a Yankee taking place in the Mets stadium.
Skuff Posted July 21, 2013 Report Posted July 21, 2013 I recently bought Less Than Jake's highly-praised second major-label release from 1998 "Hello Rockview" as a box set of 7 45s. I just now am getting around to listening to it the whole way through, and I'm realizing how inconvenient it is. Getting up every 2-3 minutes to flip a record/change it kind of sucks. But it is a cool way to package a record and a nice collectible. I believe it was limited to 5000 copies. And, old woman next door, if you can hear this punk/ska masterpiece, I don't care. I can hear your phone ringing when I'm trying to focus on studies, so oh well. (I doubt she can hear it though.)
Carl Posted July 24, 2013 Report Posted July 24, 2013 Getting ready to interview The Crystals lead singer La La Brooks tomorrow. Hoping to have at least a few questions that don't contain the words "Phil Spector."
Brad_M Posted July 24, 2013 Report Posted July 24, 2013 I've always wondered how she got the nickname "LaLa". Oh, and also, Since she was only 16 years old when she sang lead vocal for the last two of The Crystals Top Ten U.S. hits, did she ever fantasize that the song "Then He Kissed Me" was about her and some boy she knew at the time or even a celebrity?
Carl Posted July 24, 2013 Report Posted July 24, 2013 Sounds good Brad. I was planning to ask a question along the lines of "What do you think about when you sing these songs," and using a specific song like "Then He Kissed Me" could be a good way to do it. There's also the shocking "He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)", which might be fun to hear about.
Carl Posted July 24, 2013 Report Posted July 24, 2013 The "La La" story is cute - her little sister called her that because she couldn't pronounce "Dolores." Regarding what she thought about while singing those songs, the answer was basically, "whatever Phil told me to think about." This one was fun. What I didn't realize was that from "Da Doo Ron Ron" onward, she was the only Crystal to sing on their records.
TheLizard Posted July 29, 2013 Report Posted July 29, 2013 My friend started a website and asked me to write music stuff for it. Here's my first article: http://fancysheepprivateeye.com/the-best-of-music-in-2013-so-far/
Carl Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Great stuff Tim. Almost makes me want to give Dawes another try.
RockyRaccoon Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Great stuff Tim. Almost makes me want to give Dawes another try. DO IT. They're wonderful.
TheLizard Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Great stuff Tim. Almost makes me want to give Dawes another try. Thanks! And you definitely should.
Carl Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 As someone who grew up on Growing Pains, it freaks me out when I see Alan Thicke's clone (Robin Thicke) as an R&B/Pop star. Didn't think Dr. Seaver had it in him.
bluesboy Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 The Red Holloway, Clark Terry Sextet - I Got it Bad (And That Ain't Good) An old Duke Ellington tune.
Carl Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 The Red Holloway, Clark Terry Sextet - I Got it Bad (And That Ain't Good) An old Duke Ellington tune. Goes great with a glass of bourbon. Excellent find.
Carl Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 I'd like to think that Robert Plant saw our Tweet yesterday. Here's how it could have happened: We Tweeted about Patty Griffin's song "Up to the Mountain," since it was the anniversary of Martin Luther King's famous speech, and the song is about him. Patty retweeted it (https://twitter.com/PattyGMusic). She's married to Robert Plant. All of this really happened, but we'll have to confabulate the part where she shows off Songfacts to Robert Plant.
Brad_M Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 I don't think she showed it to him yet but she did tell him about it. Here's his reaction right after she mentioned it during an instrumental break in the middle of one of their songs at last night's concert.
Carl Posted September 2, 2013 Report Posted September 2, 2013 Love it Brad! If you were trying to breed a Roots music sensation, you would probably pick these two as the parents.
Carl Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 Interesting personality test: What is your favorite song with the title "Cannonball"?
