Farin
today, while tagging some songs in last.fm I had a thought/question: would you consider Patti Smith's "Gloria" to be a cover of the Them song?
Farin
because it's basically the same chorus, but completely different lyrics, you know?
Viaene
then it's not really a cover to me. more like a new song inspired by another song.
Farin
you would think so, wouldn't you? yet eg songfacts and wikipedia are listing Patti Smith's song only as a cover on the page of the Them song... so I'm a bit unsure...
Levis
How's the melody?
Farin
maybe I should post some links to the songs in question, huh? Gloria ~ Them (1971) Gloria ~ Patti Smith (1975)
Levis
Hmm, I can imagine it being classified as a cover if it shares a chorus but I wouldn't tag it as such.
Farin
alright
Shawna
because it's basically the same chorus, but completely different lyrics, you know? this is quite weird. I don't know the song you're talking about, but I'm thinking Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" is maybe the same sort of thing? He uses the chorus from "Sweet Home Alabama" and the music from "Werewolves Of London," but the verses are original (as it gets with that sort of song, anyway)
Farin
^ I posted the links to the songs I meant up there in the end, I think you could compare it like that... only with a much higher quality of course
Jenny
I am truly sad for Jennifer Hudson and her sister. I hope that they continue to lean on each other through this tragedy and come out stronger.

Uncle Joe
Maybe not an entire thread but I do remember such discussion. I recall we mentioned David Bowie's son Zowie and Frank Zappa's kids, Dweezil and Moon Unit.

TheLizard
I've got to admit, Metallica's video for their new song All Nightmare Long is pretty darn cool. And the song isn't bad, either.

bazooka
maybe I should post some links to the songs in question, huh? Gloria ~ Them (1971) Gloria ~ Patti Smith (1975) [smaller]Kind of Beside the Point Now Dept. but [/smaller] The definitive version is from 1964. It's Them with Van Morrison. This wikipedia article lists many cover versions including the Shadows of Knight whose effort topped "the original in the U.S. only in areas where Them's version could not be played, because it contained the words, She comes to my room ". And the article makes the obvious comments about Patti Smith's Gloria as well.
