johnnyguitar
Our Summer holiday this year is going to include a Winnebago drive across the Mohave and then a week up the California coast road. Of course we have to have a musical soundtrack for the journey.... Suggestions please...so I can get burning!

Tony Baloni
Anything by Sufjan Stevens Dead Flowers by the Stones is the perfect song to drive around to, IMO.
johnnyguitar
I've already got all the Beach Boys and Rickie Lee Jones, Don Henley and Eagles I need. Got some Colbe Caillat and Stephanie Dowsen, There will be plenty of bluegrass (Nickel Creek, Alison Krauss)There will be six of us from 50 to 13 years old. Girlies and boilies. I'm hoping to compile a few CD's of classics and obscurities from the last 40 years to the present day. We will be passing through hot, barren desert...and then hit the surf...Big Sur! Dead Kennedys sounds good. I'll check out Sufjan (thanks)....keep 'em coming!
Farin
QotSA's "Songs for the Deaf" can be seen as a concept album about driving through the desert, you could take anything (or everything) from that album

MindCrime
Living just up the Freeway from the Mojave desert, we tend to venture that area often. My preference varies each time, but I usually include the Doors' first 2 albums. Riders On the Storm is my favorite track during the long drive. bluesboy
I've been to Big Sur about 20 times and the scenery never ceases to amaze me. You need to get off the highway and absorb the beauty of this wonderous coastline. Everybody's music is different, but I would put on David Crosby's first solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name (1971) Here's a few cuts from the album - Laughing Traction in the Rain / Music is Love For the Mojave run I'd put on some Grateful Dead. If you go through Los Angeles, I'd put on some Arthur Lee and Love Seven & Seven Is Try to get up to Santa Cruz about 50 miles north of Big Sur. Of course you should swing down San Diego way before you head north and we'll show you the dynamite spots only the locals know about.
