blind-fitter
Could we clarify, once and for all, for the benefit of those of us who are a bit slow on the uptake: is this a thread about "Worst Singers" per se, or about "vocalists who manage to transcend their limited vocal skills, (by dint of other attributes: intensity, "soul", individuality, charisma, etc.)? Rayzor
The second one. People who can't sing but still draw a large crowd because of the band being good enough to hide the horrible vocal skills or the charisma, sex-appeal, etc...
Ken
By virtue of the fact that any of the aforementioned artists have achieved a degree of popularity and garnered fans speaks of their success. No one has yet mentioned William Hung whom, by comparison, was a roadside accident.
Levis
Could we clarify, once and for all, for the benefit of those of us who are a bit slow on the uptake: is this a thread about "Worst Singers" per se, or about "vocalists who manage to transcend their limited vocal skills, (by dint of other attributes: intensity, "soul", individuality, charisma, etc.)? The second one. People who can't sing but still draw a large crowd because of the band being good enough to hide the horrible vocal skills or the charisma, sex-appeal, etc... That's how I interpret it as well. However, if those are the standards being used then the word 'annoying' shouldn't come up at all (except by people who aren't fans) because that would indicate that the person hasn't been able to overcome the shortcoming of his/her voice and therefore isn't a 'best singer' at all (since the voice is neither objectively attractive or subjectively appealing). blind-fitter
No one has yet mentioned William Hung whom, by comparison, was a roadside accident. You don't mean "Pretty " Will Hung???! I get mistaken for him quite often. I've overheard ladies in the street muttering amongst themselves as I pass, "Have you seen him? He's pretty Will Hung". Ombre Vivante
Poppa? Is that really you? Nah, man. I think he said it the way black people say it, but it's spelled "brotha"/"brutha"
Steel2Velvet
Joe Cocker, Leon Redbone and Leonard Cohen come to mind ... as does Frank Zappa (who just might have actually been Leon Redbone.)
Mars88
That guy from the Crash Test Dummies and also Chris Martin from Coldplay (although I like a few of their songs).
Levis
Brad Roberts = guy from CTD his voice is a bit... distinctive, yes. But he makes good use of it!
chinchu
Joe Cocker??? Are you kidding me??? He's great!!! I'm gonna say Thom Yorke... He sounds terrible and he's ugly as hell...
chinchu
I still think Joe Cocker is a good singer... And i know what this thread is about, that's why I said Thom Yorke, I like Radiohead, but he just has an ugly voice...
daslied
I, for one, think that Thom Yorke has a beautiful voice that perfectly fits the music of the band. That should be the ultimate goal of a singer.
Tony Baloni
That's not really the point of the thread. It's people who have ugly voices but you still like them. Voices with character. The best example I can come up with is Isaac Brock.
TheLizard
Has anyone mentioned Jello Biafra yet?
Steel2Velvet
I still think Joe Cocker is a good singer... Sort of like when he really nails that last note on "You Are So Beautiful?"
Steel2Velvet
I love Joe Cocker, bought many of his albums, but he is far from a "good singer" with a "good voice."
TheLizard
Just thought of another great "bad" singer: Shane MacGowan.
_Laurie_
Tom Petty.....some songs his voice is okay...some songs not so okay...but I like him anyways...
Levis
^ Oh yes, good one. He doesn't have a fantastic voice, but it works for him.
scott
I love tom petty's voice it totally sucks, but it sounds so... I dunno, natural and just 'right' for his music. Couple that with the fact that he's written some of the most truly beautiful music in American rock history. The 'She's the one' soundtrack is a true gem, and a truly odd work, as it has some of Tom's best, most touching songs, but he put them on a movie soundtrack, crazy Out of all those seventies 'rock' groups, Tom Petty truly stands out. You know, amongst Aerosmith, and all those other blues/rock/folky incarnations of the same thing.
