many big names up... let's get my little ones into the mix.

Tom's Diner - Suzanne Vega (1990)

Wiki: An article in Business 2.0 magazine revealed that "Tom's Diner" was also used by Karlheinz Brandenburg to develop the audio compression scheme known as MP3 at what is now the Fraunhofer Society... Brandenburg adopted the song for testing purposes, listening to it again and again each time he refined the scheme, making sure it did not adversely affect the subtlety of Vega's voice. Thus, it is not an exaggeration to say that the MP3 compression format is specifically tuned to play the song "Tom's Diner".

for people who don't like (free!) mp3s watch the video :)

Thomas D. is the singer and as usual for his lyrics they are very deep, poetic ones... I'll try to translate (even though you can enjoy the song without knowing what it's about)

(at the beginning of the video he says "this is for my family" btw)

[spoilera:1]Millions of Legions

I will pass the tests that life gives me

Continue looking for what keeps me alive

with that I'm not alone, and will never be

'cause for the first time, solidarity frees me

so I'm ready, flowing into the aether, into the circle without traitors

early student, I'm more and more reaching out to you

come here... come here... welcome at home

I'm there for you, no, I'm here because of you

and to both of us it's clear when we have a goal in sight

then I'm betting everything on you: my sweat, my blood

my tears, my courage to finally my grief and anger

I will give you my life's because no other way,

I challenge you - I put my stake (in the wager) in

and you will find in myself with what I have connected

a treasure that I found my whole life

with every sentence I plead: use me, rely on me

with the knowledge of all sages of the world I will protect you

where I am they stand, and where I walk they walk

I asked them to come here, but the fewest see them

we will awaken under false prophets

to accept our inheritance as children of this world

and I call on every Superheroes, every great Master

every Highlander, every Warrior

every good spirit

every Superfreak, and Chosen One

to myself into the here

I have Millions of Legions behind me

In the billows of the world we chose the wildest waves

up to the innermost springs

experienced life-rapids and made ourselves ready

became wave-riders over the time

and were guardians of the truth, surfer of the sand worms

we two were the eye of the storm

became ruler of vibrations, and that as nonswimmer

because we had it and keep it still

and also you, baby, were always my child

we were lovers who, from time to time blind for love, floated past the other

were too different, as if it ever could have become boring

we were two really good nut cases, absolute beginners

because we had it and keep it still

break all the chains which normally beat the lightness

we could fly, fly without wings

and today You call on every Superheroes, every great Master

every Highlander, every Warrior

every good spirit

every Superfreak, and Chosen One

and myself into the here

You have Millions of Legions behind you

(You have Millions of Legions behind you)

(I have Millions of Legions behind me)

It was the night of the vampires

in the city of the wild animals

they pull me to them

if I loose my balance

I'll submerge and melt into this mass of mutants

soulless wanderers, and their relatives

And I'm struggling to the heavens

for a change of the spirit

raise my hands to god

or whoever's hanging around there

Sovereign of my life -

this throne is mine

cause I live and govern here.

And then I lift my quill as a shield against the pain

that reaches me from the battlefield of love.

Although it seems as if everyone here sings gloomy songs

I'll wash myself clean of the slime

and enter new grounds.

This boy's standing at the edge

and with nothing in his hands

without fear in his eyes

and his back to the wall

and then he calls on every Superheroes, every great Master

every Highlander, every Warrior

every good spirit

every Superfreak, and Chosen Ones

and he calls me

and has Millions of Legions behind him

(I have Millions of Legions behind me)[/spoilera]

Things are looking sooo good! Great songs, great friends, what more could you ask? Great to see Judo, and Sweet Jane! I hope some other "old timers" make it for the party! :) 'Course the most important "old timer" is already here, Darryl! ;)

Here are my two:

First in honor of the #100th Top Ten:

I Just Want to Celebrate ~ Rare Earth (1971)

Second, the song I've been singing for the past several weeks:

Workin' Man's Blues ~ Merle Haggard (1969)

Don't forget to campaign for your songs!! :coolio:

I'm going a little '80's crazy this week:

We Got The Beat - The Go-Go's (1982)

I was a tween when this came out and it was the first all-girl band I was exposed to. Girls can rock!

The Tide is High - Blondie (1980)

This song reminds me of the first summer after my family moved back to the US after two years in Colombia. Our new house was a half hour drive from the beach and this song was all over the radio. Every time I hear it, I swear I can smell the ocean.

Writing in the car... :help: ...and you and Lucky probably drive on the right hand side of the road too !

:D

:P I don't write while I'm driving, silly....I wait untill I get to a stop light at least... :D ...And when I'm the passenger, I can't read or write in the car while it's moving...I get car sick really bad....it's terrible, I've always been that way..

Thanks, Martin.

My little stories are my way of campaigning for my songs. I didn't realize until now that I picked songs by groups that feature great looking ladies. If I really want to get aggressive with my campaigning, I will sway the men's votes with pictures of these lovely ladies!!!!!

My first nomination:

Zombie - Cranberries (1994)

The_Cranberries_-_Zombie.jpg

Songfacts facts

This song is about the war in Nothern Ireland, an issue of 800 years out, but only the last 100 year it has been very violently. Luckily things have calmed down nowadays, the road to peace is clear now. It's a very energetic song, which I like to jam on my guitar from time to time ;)

According to me this song should make the top ten because it's a classic song know by everyone and disliked by few.

My second nomination:

One of us - Joan Osborne (1996)

JoanOsbourneOneOfUsCDSingleCover.jpg

Songfacts facts

The song looks at religion and belief from a unexpected view, what if God would be a common man, living his life like other common people.

I think it's kind of a metaphore, but to explain that I invite you to listen to the text ;)

According to me this song should make the top 10 because it's a great and peacefull (even melanchonic) tune with a text that opens debate on religion.

thank you for listening :headphones:

Free Ride - The Edgar Winter Group

Toys In The Attic - Aerosmith

You never know, Martin. Your nominations may do better than you think. I don't think mine will do very well, but, I've thought that before and been wrong. I've also had high expectations for other songs which subsequently tanked. Keep your fingers crossed.

Umm, well Darryl, yes we probably DO drive on the right side. At least I do, and I'm pretty sure Laurie does as well. It's so much better than the wrong side! ;)
