4 Dillenger

Hey Jim, Jim, just a minute y'all

I want to ask you somethin'

I want you to spell somethin' for me Jim

Can you do that? Sure John

But I want you to spell for me New York

John, why you ask me to do that?

I just want you to spell New York, Jim

Well alright, I'm gonna go ahead man

N-E-W Y-O-R-K, that's New York man

No Jim, you've made a mistake, Jim

I'm gonna teach you the right way

And the proper way to spell New York

Well, go ahead, John

A knife, a fork, a bottle and a cork

That's the way we spell New York, Jim - yeah

You see I'm a dynamite

So all you got to do is hold me tight

Because I'm out a sight, you know

'Cause I'm a dynamite

But everytime I walk in the rain

Man, o man, I feel a pain, I feel a burning pain

Keep on burning in my bloody brain

I've got cocaine runnin' around my brain

I've got cocaine runnin' around my brain

I want you to dig me soul brother and soul sister

I want you hold me tight because I'm a dynamite - yeah

I've got cocaine runnin' around my brain

No matter where I treat my guest

You see they always like my kitchen best

'Cause I've cocaine runnin' around my brain

cocaine runnin' around my brain, yea

Hey Jim, Jim? Where is Jim, man?

Jim, I want you to tell me somethin'

I want you to spell for me New York, Jim

Come on, Jim, I want you to spell New York

A knife, a fork, a bottle and a cork

That's the way we spell New York

Right on, out of sight man, right on, ooh

Right on, yeah, right on

Hey Jim, Jim, just a minute y'all

I want to ask you somethin'

I want you to spell somethin' for me, Jim

Can you do that? Sure John

But I want you to spell for me New York

John, why you ask me to do that?

I just want you to spell New York, Jim

Well alright, I'm gonna go ahead man

Man oh man, I'm on the run

I've got to reach the setting sun

'Cause I've got cocaine

A whole lot, whole lot of cocaine, man

Runnin' around my brain, runnin' around my brain

cocaine, cocaine, runnin' around my brain, yeah

How about this one by Jackson Browne, circa 1976....

Cocaine

You take sally and Ill take sue

Their aint no difference between the two

Cocaine, running all round my brain

Headin down scott, turnin up main

Looking for that girl that sells cocaine

Cocaine, runnin all round my brain

Late last night about a quarter past four

Ladanyi come knockin down my hotel room door

Wheres the cocaine--

Its runnin all round my brain

I was talking to my doctor down at the hospital

He said, son, it says here youre twenty-seven,

But thats impossible

Cocaine-- you look like you could be forty-five

Now Im losing touch with reality and Im almost out of blow

Its such a fine line-- I hate to see it go

Cocaine, runnin all round my brain

Here's a youtube... Cocaine ~ Jackson Browne

[smallest] from the wikipedia article [/smallest] Cocaine Blues :

.. Yet another song named Cocaine Blues exists -- arguably the most recorded -- that is recognizable for the refrain "Cocaine run all 'round my brain" and the lyric "Cocaine's for horses Lord it ain't men/They tell me it'll kill me but they won't say when." This is referred to the "traditional version" of Cocaine Blues by many people in the music business ... It originates from The Rev. Gary Davis, from whom Dave Van Ronk and others learnt it. Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Bob Dylan, Hoyt Axton, David Bromberg, Nick Drake, Jackson Browne, Keith Richards and many others have recorded this song. Found on his Live at the Old Quarter album, Townes Van Zandt's version features a slightly different refrain, but still has the "horses" line.

I remember a famous version from years before Jackson Browne's, but I can't for the life of me remember the artist.

Well guys, I am v impressed on your cocaine knowledge. It was all a hazy memory from my youth but I heard this song only once from a jukebox in Butlins of all places so I imagine it was a single or b side. The guy seemed to almost say the line rather than sniff... sorry!! rather than sing it.

Check out Dave Van Ronk's version of "Cocaine Blues," on which I heard the "mucous membrane" reference long before I heard Jackson Browne's version. (Looking at a number Google! links to "Cocaine Blues" popped up the Dave Van Ronk quote.) :stars:

MMM!! Possibly could be Dilliger. I was only 10 at the time. Thanks guys and gals.

If you were staying at Butlins when you heard it, I'm guessing you're a UK citizen, right? (Tourists from abroad didn't tend to stay at Butlins in the 70s) Most of the other "Cocaine running around my brain" suggestions have been predominantly blues-orientated artists, whereas the Dillinger one is distinctively rockers' reggae, and the vocal is what one might described as spoken-word , rather than sung, and in an unmistakeably Jamaican accent. The other main "hook" is the "a knife, a fork, a bottle and a cork, that's the way you spell "New York" line, which features repeatedly throughout. Does that not ring any bells?

It's not inconceivable that you would hear Dillinger's "Cocaine In My Brain" on a Butlin's jukebox. It was released as a single*, and was a kind of "cult hit" in the UK. My introduction to it was at the weekly "alternative disco" at Scunthorpe Baths Hall, circa 1981. Happy days....

*More recently- I'd estimate about 15 years ago, when banging techno remixes of old classics were de rigueur- "Dillinger's "Cocaine" was re-released as a 12" single as a shredding techno remix version, with the brilliant reggae original included on the b-side.
