It was the Summer of 1970. I was with a student group touring Japan and I happened to see "M*A*SH" and "Woodstock" on a movie theater's double bill. There weren't many people in the theater, and "Woodstock" was up first. Seeing Japanese subtitles on the right had side of the screen was about as different as I'd ever seen. Richie Havens opened the festival, and the hypnotic guitar and congas started "Freedom." Here he is some years later, still playing his heart out, covering songs like a circus tent, and making great music.
I was navigating YouTube, when I came across a "What one-hit wonder of the 1960's or 1970's would you like me to react to?" post. I looked long and deep at the suggestions, but, at first glance, nobody remembered Rebone's "Come And Get Your Love." I corrected that deficiency and posted a sad 1962 song - Dickie Lee: "Patches." I looked around for Redbone's live performance and ran into "Guardians of the Galaxy." Then there was my favorite "dance at Pineview" acoustic version from "The Postman." And now, Fil will illustrate how this song continues to move people to this day.
