    Psychedelic Furs?

    edit: Husker Du?

    edit edit: Happy Mondays?

edit edit edit: (need to do more research on these guys) The Replacements?

    edit x4: Sonic Youth?

edit edit edit edit edit: Dinosaur Jr. , New Order, Jane's Addiction, R.E.M., Love And Rockets, Ramones, Chili Peppers, The Smiths, Pixies...

So it's not a total loss, right?

Not if you ignore the fact that not a single one of those bands is from that era. The Furs were 1977 at least. It may count if you regard it as a good year because the Smiths folded.

    1987 Wiki

Judging from that list, 1987 was a dark, dark year for music...how appalling...can anyone think of a worse year?

Early REM I can handle, Early Crowded House...fine...err, and that's about it. And I was a young man then! There must have been some decent music issued that year?

Where's BF when you need him? Surely there must have been some redeeming music to be had?

    ;)

  3. The classic (and I know a bit about this) is 'Torn Between Two Lovers' by Mary MacGregor, although my personal favourite is 'Be My Downfall by Del Amitri.

The bus is pulling out and I guess Id better go

Before I make a grave mistake and let my feelings show

And twenty miles away she waits alone for me

But when I try to picture her youre the one I see

And in another situation I could put up a fight

But you will be my downfall tonight

So the night is coming down, drowning us in blue

And it all points towards the things we know we shouldnt do

And as I look at you and I fall under your spell

Well I know I should be thinking of her lying there herself

And when faced with temptation you know a man should stand and fight

But you will be my downfall tonight

Be my downfall be my great regret be the one girl

    That Ill never forget

Be my undoing be my slow road to ruin tonight

So the bus is pulling out and Im grounded here with you

And I want to say the sweet things babe Ive always wanted to

So tell me now the tail-lights have gone out of sight

Baby wont you be my downfall....

    .....once again tonight.

    ;)

  4. i first met this girl in highschool we had amazing chemisty and shared similiar views on almost anything...but ever since college she just neglected me and now it breaks me to see her just not care anymore..

we were never a couple or nothin but we both know we shared something special. what am i to do now, ya know, i dont think a crush lasts for 7-8 years, does it?? anyway i plan on compiling a cd for her to listen to w/e i just need some suggestions..

here's what i got so far.....

fleetwood mac - go your own way

    cat stevens - wild world

    grateful dead - brokedown palace

bob dylan - girl from north country

bob dylan - it ain't me babe

johnny cash - cry cry cry

johnny cash - i walk the line

buddy holly - blue days black nights

buddy holly - crying, waiting, hoping

    buddy holly - maybe baby

CSNY - suite: judy blue eyes

jefferson airplane - somebody to love

neil young - like a hurricane

rolling stones - she's so cold

    need help, thanx

    I think there's a few on here who'd tell you a crush can last 20 or 30 years...at least.

    : )

Send her what you love...if she hates it, you've got your answer.

  5. IMHO the re-mastered Steve McQueen (plus bonus disc) is the place to start and finish. They went seriously downhill after that and their only US, minor hit...the one about Elvis and jumping frogs, is an absolute nadir. Try these...if you like them, the album versions are ten times better!

    :D

  6. Vital though it is to the functioning of the body, the heart has no specific, proven engagement with our emotional processes. Any suggestion to the contrary is purely speculation based upon sentimentality.

I would heartily ( :D ) disagree with this sentiment. You may not have experienced it, but I certainly have. My heart goes all over the place when I'm in love....I have christened it 'heart wheeling'...happens all the time to me. Extraordinary feeling! Hearts flutter, pound and sink (although it sounds that you may experience this in a more visceral way...in your bowels) and they certainly don't seem to be controlled by our brains...not mine anyway. ;)

  7. Hah...! I told you I wasn't a complete moron. Thanks for that Murdocking. I do think that cliches play a slightly more elevated role in song lyrics than in poetry. IMHO poetry should endeavour to avoid cliches at all costs  but there is some latitude on song lyrics for twisting well worn phrases into newer metaphors so, hearts don't get broken any more, they get skewered, diced, ripped, etc. and if you can think of a great new adjective then hurrah!

On re-reading the original though, it does rather rely on somewhat tired similies  and BF's comments of a year or so ago were quite funny, so perhaps I was being over sensitive to his carping sarcasm. :D

Thanks for the positive comments. It does have quite a nice tune too....which makes all the difference. Even a cliche can sound good if it has a nice tune.

  8. A friend who is emigrating to New Zealand has offered me custody of his entire collection of vinyl; literally hundreds of albums of predominantly punk, post-punk, goth and alt-rock.

My sadness at probably never seeing Dominic, his lovely wife Julie and baby Jack ever again will at least be tinged by a degree of unfettered joy. Especially if they manage to return the step-ladders I lent them about 8 years ago before they leave for NZ.

Every cloud has a silver lining. Can you have 'a degree of unfettered joy'? Sounds a tad oxymoronic to me, like being 'almost unique'. No matter, I comiserate with you on your loss and congratulate you on your gain.

    ;)

I've got a ladder you can have.
