Psychedelic Furs?
edit: Husker Du?
edit edit: Happy Mondays?
edit edit edit: (need to do more research on these guys) The Replacements?
edit x4: Sonic Youth?
edit edit edit edit edit: Dinosaur Jr. , New Order, Jane's Addiction, R.E.M., Love And Rockets, Ramones, Chili Peppers, The Smiths, Pixies...
So it's not a total loss, right?
Not if you ignore the fact that not a single one of those bands is from that era. The Furs were 1977 at least. It may count if you regard it as a good year because the Smiths folded.

You were definitely 'Born Under a Bad Sign'

Oh. My. God! I can't look at that list without
I think there's enough there to definitively grant 1987 the status of 'The Year of Musical Nadir' or something pithier.
What unutterable tripe. Was there nothing new that year?

This is wrong on so many levels...

and now check out the more sophisticated version for European consumption...note how much more sensual the looks...how much more balletic the moves.

Judging from that list, 1987 was a dark, dark year for music...how appalling...can anyone think of a worse year?
Early REM I can handle, Early Crowded House...fine...err, and that's about it. And I was a young man then! There must have been some decent music issued that year?
Where's BF when you need him? Surely there must have been some redeeming music to be had?

I suppose, because he wrote it, he can do what he likes with this...but, sweet Jesus!

The classic (and I know a bit about this) is 'Torn Between Two Lovers' by Mary MacGregor, although my personal favourite is 'Be My Downfall by Del Amitri.
The bus is pulling out and I guess Id better go
Before I make a grave mistake and let my feelings show
And twenty miles away she waits alone for me
But when I try to picture her youre the one I see
And in another situation I could put up a fight
But you will be my downfall tonight
So the night is coming down, drowning us in blue
And it all points towards the things we know we shouldnt do
And as I look at you and I fall under your spell
Well I know I should be thinking of her lying there herself
And when faced with temptation you know a man should stand and fight
But you will be my downfall tonight
Be my downfall be my great regret be the one girl
That Ill never forget
Be my undoing be my slow road to ruin tonight
So the bus is pulling out and Im grounded here with you
And I want to say the sweet things babe Ive always wanted to
So tell me now the tail-lights have gone out of sight
Baby wont you be my downfall....
.....once again tonight.

It might take 20 years...but Javier Bardem will eventually be worshipped for his role in 'No Country For Old Men'
Right now, I hate and fear him....but a masterful performance!
-
Years ago I had an horrendous commute...it wasn't just the miles, it was through London, so it took forever. I vowed never to do it ever again.
So I don't!
-
I've recently had a 'bustle in my hedgerow' and it only ever leads to dissolution. Beware!
-
Trying a new 'Jamie' dish tonight, well, new to us.
A real fancy lamb joint....yummy!

Send her what you love...if she hates it, you've got your answer.

IMHO the re-mastered Steve McQueen (plus bonus disc) is the place to start and finish. They went seriously downhill after that and their only US, minor hit...the one about Elvis and jumping frogs, is an absolute nadir. Try these...if you like them, the album versions are ten times better!

The re-issued, re-mastered version of Prefab Sprout's masterpiece 'Steve McQueen' has a bonus disc of acoustic versions which are gorgeous.
Get it.

Vital though it is to the functioning of the body, the heart has no specific, proven engagement with our emotional processes. Any suggestion to the contrary is purely speculation based upon sentimentality.
I would heartily ( ) disagree with this sentiment. You may not have experienced it, but I certainly have. My heart goes all over the place when I'm in love....I have christened it 'heart wheeling'...happens all the time to me. Extraordinary feeling! Hearts flutter, pound and sink (although it sounds that you may experience this in a more visceral way...in your bowels) and they certainly don't seem to be controlled by our brains...not mine anyway.

Anything by Metallica.
Anything?
Do you have an optical condition that ensures lachrymal responsiveness even under the direst of musical circumstances...or what?

Hah...! I told you I wasn't a complete moron. Thanks for that Murdocking. I do think that cliches play a slightly more elevated role in song lyrics than in poetry. IMHO poetry should endeavour to avoid cliches at all costs but there is some latitude on song lyrics for twisting well worn phrases into newer metaphors so, hearts don't get broken any more, they get skewered, diced, ripped, etc. and if you can think of a great new adjective then hurrah!
On re-reading the original though, it does rather rely on somewhat tired similies and BF's comments of a year or so ago were quite funny, so perhaps I was being over sensitive to his carping sarcasm.
Thanks for the positive comments. It does have quite a nice tune too....which makes all the difference. Even a cliche can sound good if it has a nice tune.

A friend who is emigrating to New Zealand has offered me custody of his entire collection of vinyl; literally hundreds of albums of predominantly punk, post-punk, goth and alt-rock.
My sadness at probably never seeing Dominic, his lovely wife Julie and baby Jack ever again will at least be tinged by a degree of unfettered joy. Especially if they manage to return the step-ladders I lent them about 8 years ago before they leave for NZ.
Every cloud has a silver lining. Can you have 'a degree of unfettered joy'? Sounds a tad oxymoronic to me, like being 'almost unique'. No matter, I comiserate with you on your loss and congratulate you on your gain.
I've got a ladder you can have.
-
I've broken all three of mine already...so no point me telling.

Jeez...how did you figure that out...with the error as well?

Peaking? They were all on the skids by then. I saw Sonic Youth in 1989 and they were dreadful. Mudhoney were good though. The Furs had been and were well gone by then. The Smiths farted their last that year.
All well past it!
