The Pretty Things are awesome. First band to do a rock opera but the record label held it back letting the Who put out Tommy first making alot of people think The Prettys were copying the Who.

I thought they looked pretty cheesy to me. Bands like the Darkness seem to be stealing there flare.

"The Mystery of Leaping Fish" This is a silent film made in 1916. The main characters name is Coke Ennyday he is kind of like a messed up Sherlock Holmes shooting up heroin and snorting coke. It is done in a funny Charley Chaplin type of way but its just crazy to see stuff done like that in a 1916 movie.

Hey, I love Tom Petty too. I have all the records and all that. I'am saying people that are all about the "underground" would love Petty if he wasn't all over the classic rock station. Instead they won't even consider him in the same vein is Dylan. I love Elvis Costello and everybody I know loves him too and he doesn't get enough airtime. Dave Matthews and John Mayer aren't wide spread? Step outside I see hundreds of cars with their stickers on them(usually high school girls or frat boys). They are constantly played on the radio and MTV and they aren't widespread? Do you want world wide domination? They are also not as good as Bob Dylan, Tom Petty or Elvis Costello. I dont even think they deserve to be in the same catagory.

Ken, I agree with you. I feel like sometimes that stuff focuses to much on how many scales they can play and end up sounding like machines. I like it from the gut not from a book.

Thats life. Tom Petty would be twenty times more influential if he wouldn't have been accepted into the mainstream or just more bands would say that they were influenced by him. I always think about that with Big Star. I love them have all the records they SHOULD be played on the radio, people would eat it up. Alot of bands say they are influenced by them. I'm also a big fan of Zoot Horn Rollo. He made me fall in love withe slide, Elmore James helped alot too.

I think people get wrapped up in guitar players when its bands that make music. If you just pay attention to the guitar you will be going the way of the 80's hair bands. I don't think its how fast or perfect you play that makes you a great guitar player. I feel like it more about emotion and if its right for that song. My favorite solo that I'am into right now is Neil Young's Words(between the lines of age) because I think it is so raw and fits that song just right. Thats my thing might not be yours but I dont like guitar players that play perfect. If I want perfection I will break out some Mozart.

REM underrated I dont even know if they should be in this catagory. I think they are great dont get me wrong. Underrated they are above Black Sabbath, The Who, Husker Du and Bad Brains in a rock catagory now if this was just a band catagory maybe but rock?

Where is The Pretty Things, MC5 and 13th Floor Elevators? I hate lists because then people are gonna assume that this are the best rock bands which is far from true.

But do you think those Beatles songs beat out the Rolling Stones Street Fighting Man(in consideration to rock).

I think NWA could have elements of rock maybe in what they are saying not playing. Jello Biafra the singer from the Dead Kennedys said they were a great punk rock band.
