You're right Elvish - Susan Tedeschi is great - she reminds me alot of Bonnie Raitt. I downloaded 3 songs on Amazon ... really impressive. And CC - I'm very jealous you got to see the Stones and Los Lonely Boys. I'll bet it was unforgettable! Love them both.

thanks ea and bluesboy - I had just been reading about Burning man and realized it was pretty close to the anniversary of Grams death - I really didn't see anything about the origins so I thought there might be something there. I guess it's just a coincidence. I'd really like to check out the burning man though...what a concept. And Gram Parsons really rocked my world.

They really have - I also love their covers of Tainted Love and Personal Jesus. For funny covers I think Steve and Edie doing Black Hole Sun is hysterical - and for being better than the original - Hurt by Johnny Cash is devastating. Flaming Lips doing the White Stripes - Seven Nation Army is really different and anything covered by Nirvana is incredible--Where did you sleep last night is heartrending and The Man who Sold the World is absolutely haunting. The Corrs covered REM's Everybody Hurts and it will break your heart. Imagine by A Perfect Circle is really good as is What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding on the same disc. I just love covers - as long as they don't sound exactly like the original and add something new to the work.

... first you have to define rock music and that is impossible and actually oxymoronic - it's like the rules of anarchy - just wouldn't be right. There has been great and mediocre and crappy music since people have been around I imagine - it's really disrepectful to artists who are trying to tell us something about themselves to say there hasn't been anything new or great in 20 or 30 years...there will always be rock - just like there will always be classical music - there are still kids in conservatories studying composition and one of them could write something today to rival Bach and Beethoven. If you think blues has died you need to listen to Joe Bonamassa or Jonny lang, if you think nothing is new you should listen to A Perfect Circle or Interpol or Tool or Kings of Leon and if you think country music doesn't rock you have to listen to Cowboy Junkies, or WIlco or even Willie Nelson or Patsy CLine and Hank Sr. If you limit yourself to one time or one genre and tell yourself the rest is crap you are missing out on a whole lot of incredible sound. I grew up listening to the Beatles, the Stones and the Doors but I love Outkast, Blackeyed Peas and the Roots too. oh and the Foo Fighters, the White Stripes, Greenday and Los Lonely Boys. Rock is not over - it never will be.

DOes anyone know if this annual festival (or whatever it is) has anything to do with the burning of Gram Parson's body at Joshua Tree National Monument?? DId the festival start like the next year or are they completely unrelated? THANKS

I LOVE THIS BAND..... I'm also surprised no one has mentioned them yet - I really think someone must have but ok - neighborhood #3 from Funeral is my favorite - I hadn't heard any of their previous work - someone burnt me a copy of Funeral and said I had to hear them - they were right.

Bluesboy - how could I forget about The Beatles movies - all with rock sound tracks of course...and the Elvis and beach movies - even older - so there certainly were rock soundtracks long before Flash Gordon in 1980. Thanks for the link - it was enlightening.

I think there really were quite a few movies with rock soundtracks before FLash Gordon in 1980 - Rock and Roll High School - 1979 (incredible sound track by the way) Apocalypse Now - 1979 - featured The End but the Doors - and an awesome soundtrack otherwise Tommy - 1975 - The Who - the "rock opera" came out in 1969 Quadrophenia - the movie in 1979 - the album much earlier - 1972 - I think. Grease - 1978 - I would consider this semi-rock American Graffitti - 1973 Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell - both 1973? The Warriors - 1979 Up in Smoke - 1978 - this is a pretty rockin' soundtrack. Hair - 1979 - though the Broadway production was 6 or 7 years earlier. And also in 1980--- THE BLUES BROTHERS - definitely rock.

I can't stop watching the news from New Orleans - this is beyond unbelievable! It looks like a third world country. At least the President finally shows up today and they get some food and water to the refugees -- refugees in the United States? How is that possible...babies dying on camera --- I don't understand why they don't put these people up at all the closed up military bases - it wouldn't take much to turn the water and power back on. We got medical care to the victims of the tsunamis faster than this. People don't have insulin or heart meds they need. Soon they'll be dying from dysentary and malaria...I'm at a loss to figure out how this is allowed to go on and on.

It sounds to me like a song about Bush and 9/11 and how the President seems to be a king. I think the writer feels that we've become paranoid and greedy - or at least our leaders have - and the rest of the world is eager for our fall. I'm not sure if he thinks the top of the world has already fallen or if it's something to come but that's what I get out of it.

Great band - I really love "Danger in the Water" - and "Hounds of Love".
