  1. Rush didn't redo that song, it was covered by some metal group for Small Soldiers and that's the version you hear "remade"
  2. All three members of Rush are extremely nice and generous. I met them at thier Boston show on April 12, 2004 and after hearing of a tragedy I went through a year ago tommorow they gave me VIP front row seats, two shirts, autographed drumsticks and picks (from both Geddy and Alex), a flashing body pin, a poster, postcard, autographed picture of the whole band with "Good Luck Michael" written at the top and a keychain. Geddy and Alex are quite talkative, Neil is rather shy.
  3. OO yes definitely Greenday, especially when it comes to graduations from 8th grade and high school. Actually Hendrix isn't nearly as overrated as Zep now that I think of it, but just Greenday's Good Riddence blows all others out of the pool...
  4. I find Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana are terribly overrated. Some of its okay but I find many of their songs reduntant, dry and cliched. No offense, I used to like the first two (never liked Nirvana), but after finding my own nitch in music, they just kinda died out for me. And I also disagree about U2, one of my favorites and were I am very underrated if anything, about 1/4 of the radio stations near me never heard of them and think they're a new rap band .
  5. This is my 19th song, pretty much a progressive rock epic. Temple Wind (Written March 26, 2005 by Mike R. Smale © 2005) I. Plummet to Bedlam The rains fall down tasting so bitter, poisoning the ground and the planted seeds. The earth cracks open and the fires bleed. And a soft wind drives on. II. Overture III. Into the Cauldron The roiling ocean- strikes and drowns the seaboard. Reversed baptisms in sinful waters steal survivor's chastity- no humility- in a world deprived of sanity. Lustrous ghouls of fire dance upon the peaks of mountains, before they scorch all below. Tremors tear down burning cities aglow. Deep in some forgotten ruins, far from all the disasters. The shrine of the wind, still pure in the chaos, were all of her siblings have fallen. The body is broken, but the breath is not lost. She cries- cries out to Heaven to end the sorrow, cries- cries out for a hero. IV. The Subterfuge The clouds have parted- a knight has appeared dressed in white robes and sashes of blue. The prayer has been answered with the hero revered, to save from the shadows and restore the world's virtue. The cauldron is silent and the fallen return to harmony. But the face of the tyrant- behind the uproar the chimera appears to melee. V. The Chimera Duel The knight draws his blade, and readies his shield, and charges the beast, which had the elements unsealed. The chimera bites firm, his teeth, like spears, but the soldier of Heaven is protected from harm in his armor made from the angels' tears. Deep in some forgotten ruins, far from all the disasters. The shrine of the wind, empowers the savior, joined by her united kin. Wind and earth, fire and water, forge together a new alter. The element of spirit, to cast out the sin. Within the knight's sword the element shines, the chimera's defeated by the fighter divine. VI. Finale The sweet rain falls upon the fertile earth. The fire warms and water slakes thirst. And the soft wind drives on.
  6. Definitely 2112 parts I and II. The only two parts that appear on any of their greatest hits albums since the whole song is 20 minutes and 23 seconds.
  7. This is my 18th song, also written for my special friend Jenny. Pop/rock tune. A picture of Jenny and I can be found here. It's not as clear as the origional so it's kinda fuzzy. Moonbeam Serenade (Written March 18, 2005 by Mike R. Smale) Can you tell me what binds my body- when I see your stunning face? Can you tell me how a simple hug from you can give me grace? Well it's only when I'm with you, that I'm truly myself. And only when it's like this, is my frown upon a shelf. Out in the night, under only the moon, honey- both of our hearts are fluttering in unity. And I'll speak to gently, in a moonbeam serenade. Crimes and wars blaze madly, upon the television screen. But reflected in your soft eyes, they are purified scenes. Oh, can you tell me why, I'm warmed by your speech? And can you tell me why, only my spirit you can reach? Out in the night, under only the moon, honey- both of our hearts are fluttering in unity. And I'll speak to gently, in a moonbeam serenade.
  8. The Car's Just What I Needed for Circut City is just wrong, I can't even listen to them or that song now thanks to those overdone commercials on at least three times per break. And Circut City is not just what we need, since they don't cary a lot of needed items that Best Buy does now and I was told by CC that a particular graphics chip would be good for my pc when I said it was an ME, well that chip is too high power and would have fried my system if I put it in. No I don't think Circut City is just what I needed. Any song that has the lyrics changed to promote a phone, resturant etc ranks right up there too.
  9. I definitely agree. I really don't care for swearing in lyrcis, unless it's pretty much needed such as in Dream Theater's "Honor Thy Father". But when it's overdone to the poing where the song is ruined as it can be in some more modern songs, is where I draw a line.
  10. At the Action Music I go to for gear and lessons half of the songs named were banned from being played within the store, such as: Sweet Home Alabama Anything by Metalica, Korn and similar artists Stairway to Heaven Iron Man and the list goes on for a total of 13 as well as tapping! (Unless your Eddie Vanhalen himself a sign reads)
  11. The sown means it is planted as in sewing seeds. The somewhat awkward flow in the chorus is due to the fact that it definitely needs to be sung, as it uses a 7/4 and 5/4 alternating time signature, instead of the regualar 4/4 which is the standard time for average speech according to my English teacher.
  12. Every decade of music has its ups and downs, but in the end it all depends on personal taste. To me I like music from the classical period and the 1940s to about 1990 with the only exceptios of The Divine Comedy and Dream Theater being 90s bands (although both formed in the very late 80s) that I actually like. Just remember; the 70s did give us disco...
  13. This is my 17th song, written for Jenny and how she saved me from depression. Progressive rock tune. "Keys to Glass Gates" (Written February 12, 2005 by Mike R. Smale © 2005) Steadfast into the ghostly night, fresh from a battle without a fight. Perils ahead, no objective shown, not a way to return, my future's sown. I thought that I heard the crying of a wolf as it stared at the moon. Vigorously running to freedom from the city of infinite gloom. Held within the eye- within the eye of the seeker. I feel the growing sun upon my soul, the glimmering light unlocks the first keyhole. Ancient secrets are shared, but sometimes the truth impairs. Answers in forgotten runes, like seeing through the fog of a lagoon. Trapped within the mind- within the mind of the mortal man. I hear the angel's song upon my soul, serene words that unlock the second keyhole. I thought that I heard the crying of a wolf as it stared at the moon. Vigorously running to freedom from the city of infinite gloom. Held within the soul- within my very own soul. I feel your hand upon my heart, the final key- is you and I.
  14. I love em, the bass, guitar and drumming is amazing and I for one enjoy the vocals. I even met them and they're some of the absolute nicest people I've ever met in person too. They gave me an autographed picture of the band, Niel's signed and used drumsticks, Alex's pick, Geddy's pick since he started using one, 2 shirts, a keychain, flashing body pin, post card, poster and VIP front row seat tickets, upgrading from my last row ones. This was a reply to a note my mother was able to get backstage about a tragedy I had gone through in May 2004. I also have all of Rush's albums and Geddy Lee's solo album My Favorite Headache, I love every song on each one, making them my all time favorite. Geddy is my major bass influence as well.
  15. My list may get a little cheesey, but here are some of my favorite one hit wonders: 8675309/Jenny- Tommy Tutone (mainly coz Jenny's my girlfriend's name) Sugar, Sugar- The Archies Come On Eileen- Dexy's Midnight Runners I Ran- A Flock of Seagulls Popcorn- Hot Butter Cars- Gary Numan She Blinded Me With Science- Thomas Dolbi (actually I like a lot by him) Breakfast at Tiffany's- Deep Blue Something Yeah some of my choices are kinda lame...
  16. 1. Tears by Rush 2. The Summerhouse by The Divine Comedy 3. Red Rain by Peter Gabrial 4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John 5. Peace on Earth by U2 6. The Last Resort by The Eagles 7. New York Minute by Don Henley 8. Second Nature by Rush 9. Acrobat by U2 10. Lights by Journey
  17. My 16th song (I wrote this days ago, I almost forgot to post it, so sorry!), progressive rock tune. Wrote this while thinking of my childhood up to my current point as a senior in high school. "Chalk Dust Playground" (Written January 18, 2005 by Mike R. Smale © 2005) Endless games by a woody hollow, where the waterway meets the sea. Sheltered naps underneath the willow, a mystic childhood memory. The box of sand; an endless desert land, caravans in the moonlight. Jolly kings; crystalline springs, castles in all their might. From the high chair to the throne, all you see is all that you own. Come to the chalk dust playground, come and stay the entire day. Visit me at the chalk dust playground, until the rain washes it away. Clouds rule the sky; seasons pass on by, the playground slowly fades. Memories and dreams; forever they stay, after the playground is given up- to yesterday. From the high chair to the throne, all you see is all that you own. Come to the chalk dust playground, come and stay the entire day. Visit me at the chalk dust playground, until the rain washes it away.
  18. I'm mostly a rhythm player, but I play a lot of oldies, but some more recent songs when doing lead (since I'm primarily a bassist) that include: Heart Full of Soul- The Yardbirds White Room- Cream Bravado- Rush Last Worthless Eventing- Don Henley I play more classical guitar, even though I have an electric and not a nylon string acoustic yet.
  19. The tapping bass solo in Dream Theater's Metropolis Pt 1 is a good one, and the Rush song Scars off of Presto is nothing but bass with light drums playing a funk/jungle beat, and light guitar in the end.
  20. I completely agree with that list. In addition for mine I add: Rush (Geddy too, he rarely writes but when he does the songs are some of the most pationate) Yes The Divine Comedy Marillion Billy Joel
  21. This is my fifteenth song, I wrote this last night shortly before I went to bed, progressive rock tune. "Running to Find Eternity" (Written December 19, 2004 by Mike R. Smale © 2004) The stars fade into forever, leaving behind a dismal night. No ruler to lead a country; a wounded eagle in flight. Living under a waning sun, man turns to the sword over love. Fighting brutal wars with nothing won, executions for the mourning dove. Standing alone at the edge of the world, searching through the obscurity for any shred of integrity. Running to find eternity. Reservoirs of horrors, held back by a flouting dam. The burning of a serene village, by the peoples' own hands. The head of a pin eclipses the moon, the needle that sheds the empire's blood. A tempest rages above the world, now there's no escape from the flood. A new star shall shine, and bring forth a new day. A bud on the vine, when the old has withered away. Standing alone at the edge of the world, by the pummeling grey sea, searching through the obscurity. Running to find eternity.
  22. My list for best vocals: The Eagles Yes Genesis The Divine Comedy
  23. This link explains exactly what champer pop (a form of alternative rock) is a lot better than I can. Link to chamber pop definition The Divine Comedy is an example of a very popular Irish chamber pop band. Although it's mostly in the UK it found it's way into my style when I first heard them. Thanks for all the good feedback too, if you go to my profile here there's a link to another site under homepage were I have not just my songs but also many of my poems as well, too many to post here.
  24. Anything by Rush (unless it's heavy on synth but it's still awesome) especially The Big Money and Marathon Aerosmith- Sweet Emotion Yes- Roundabout The Divine Comedy- Gin Soaked Boy U2- Vertigo Dream Theater- Metropolis Pt 1 (and more) Geddy Lee (solo)- My Favorite Headache Genesis- Invisible Touch The Moody Blues- Question The Rolling Stones- Sympathy for the Devil A lot of my own bass lines (I'm the bassist as well as keyboards and lead vocals) are really thick too, maily on my progressive rock songs, the more pop/rock ones use moderate bass lines and the soft rock ones I'm mainly on piano and the only bass is from the lower keys.
  25. Rush's Xanadu has a long intro, as well as many of thier other songs and the same with other progressive bands such as Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Dream Theater.
