  1. All by bands named after large cats (Def Leppard, Glass Tiger, White Lion). I'll post one after lunch, though someone can certainly take my turn.
  2. Well that was quick... I guess it was too easy. Or you're an enormous geek as well.
  3. Thanks, Peaches! Now I have to go chug a salt packet. OK, what do Stephen Stills and Harry Nilsson have in common - related to television? (Because, you know, that post was so sweet.)
  4. Awesome. Am I supposed to pose a question now? I think I screwed up in the "Above, Below..." thread, so I'm being more careful now.
  5. 1. They each have albums named after dance styles: Genesis - Foxtrot Fleetwood Mac - Tango In The Night Pixies - Bossanova 2. They each released self-titled records at least 5 albums into their careers. 3. They've all had members whose last names were colors. Not necessarily essential members, in the case of Genesis, but the other two have founding members with names like this (Frank Black and Peter Green). 4. Each band had a founding member leave or break up the band. That's all I've got...
  6. "Blackbird" - Dionne Farris/Beatles "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Tori Amos/Nirvana "One" - Aimee Mann/Three Dog Night/Nilsson "Song To The Siren" - This Mortal Coil/Tim Buckley (Tim's original is the best vocal ever recorded) And my new personal favorite: "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" - The Wiggles/Split Enz (or Tim Finn) Later edit: forgot about "Found A Reason" - Cat Power/Velvet Underground. Not a VU fan, but I love this version of that song.
  7. Didn't Prudence kind of hide in her tent the whole time? Hence the "Won't you come out to play?" lyrics? Best Beatles song ever, btw.

    Lost

Each season of "24" is essentially the same, but it's just good mindless entertainment. You could catch up pretty easily. "Arrested Development" is, in my opinion, the best show in the history of tv. Better than "Seinfeld", "Cheers" or any drama. Dry humor is my middle name. And I think I've had a big boy crush on Jason Bateman since "Silver Spoons"...though I think Gob is my favorite on the show. Or Tobias. "Family Guy"...yes, growing on me quickly. BFF?

Only if you reconsider "24". At least I found the other person who watches "Arrested Development".

    Lost

Yes, my week is now shot: Sundays - "24" Mondays - "Arrested Development" Tuesdays - "Nip/Tuck" Wednesdays - "Lost" Thursdays - "Scrubs" and "My Name Is Earl", I think. "Earl" may very well suck, but I am a huge Jason Lee fan.
  11. Well, I did say "some" intelligent conversations... "Das lied" is German for "the song". My favorite composer ever (told you I was a snob) is Gustav Mahler, and one of his pieces is called "Das Lied Von Der Erde", which means "Song Of The Earth". It's actually really his 9th symphony, but he changed the title to avoid the "curse" - Beethoven and a few others died after writing their 9th symphonies, and Mahler was pretty obsessed with death. So, anyway, he wrote this lived and later wrote his actual 9th symphony. He still lived, and started his 10th symphony. And guess what? He died midway through. So he was on to something, I suppose.... Anyhoo, my favorite piece of his, and the greatest piece of music ever written, is the 8th symphony. It's called "Symphony Of A Thousand" because it takes that many people to perform as originally envisioned (double orchestra, double choirs and a boys' choir). But "Symphony" or "Thousand" aren't good screen names, so I chose "Das Lied". How's that for a rambling answer? And thanks for asking, because I detest flowers.
  12. Aw, shucks. You guys are too nice. I love this site, as it's rare to find a place to have some intelligent conversations about music. Or spout off like I know what I'm talking about...
  13. "Wah Wah" is pretty damn awesome. As are "Isn't It A Pity", "Beware Of Darkness, "I'd Have You Anytime". OK, that whole album...I bet it's the sound envisioned when Phil Spector was brought in to remix "Let It Be". I think my all-time favorite is "Long Long Long" from "The White Album", and I know it's not a solo song, but it has to be the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
  14. Jeff Buckley (son) Tim Buckley (father) - best vibrato ever, and such control Chris Cornell Stevie Wonder Doug Pinnick from King's X, when he got less screechy I do have quite a soft spot for Tom Waits - say what you will, he gets behind the emotion of a song as well as anybody.
  15. Abba would be the equivalent of when you get so hungry that your stomach starts snacking on your liver. Only by necessity/desperation. Or some weird Swedish pastry. Peaches, you appear to be from the South. Surely you've had (or at least seen) a Pork-A-Que? They're found at your finer Citgos.
  16. I also enjoy stupid analogies: Barry Manilow is to masterful music what Ramen noodles are to Alfredo's: servicable yet workman-like, and generally soul-less. Phil Collins would be akin to Totino's pizza: one or two great moments here and there, but overall forgettable. You could also call him a Chili's (or insert bad chain restaurant here) appetizer - fine enough, but shouldn't be substituted for the main course, which in this case would be Peter Gabriel. Captain and Tenille would be a Pork-A-Que.
  17. Hey, thanks a lot Edna! I think sometimes I'm embarassed about what I know - I'm actually quite a music snob. But I do music research for a living, and have a natural ability to retain completely unimportant trivia... Anyhoo, quality over quantity, eh?
  18. The first quote is from Malcolm X, from his "Message To The Grass-Roots" speech in 1963. I'm by no means an expert on this (or him), but I believe the point of it was to unify African-Americans - "You're all oppressed because of the same thing - race, not religion, politics or anything else". That's obviously a paraphrase. Anyway, here's the quote at the beginning of the song. It was edited a little bit for the song: "And in the few moments we have left, we want to talk right down to earth in a language that everybody here can easily understand" The ending quote is JFK's famous "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". This is from his inaugural address in 1961. I guess the significance of the quotes for this particular song is that both were from men who were assassinated. Most of the song actually seems to be denouncing idolatry, but there is the one stanza containing the line "A leader speaks, a leader dies". They also seem to make no distinction between "good" and "evil", as each time they mention a "hero" they pair them with an "enemy" - Mussolini and Kennedy, and Stalin and Gandhi. Hope this helps!
  19. "Heroes And Villains" - The Beach Boys "Let's Live For Today" - Grass Roots "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)" - The Hombres "Light My Fire" - Doors "Respect" - Aretha Franklin "Sunday Will Never Be The Same" - Spanky & Our Gang "With A Little Help From My Friends" - The Beatles "Time Is On My Side" - The Rolling Stones (1964) "For The Good Times" - Al Green (1972) "Good Times Bad Times" - Led Zeppelin (1969) "Time Of The Season" - The Zombies (1969) "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" - Tyrone Davis (1970) "Your Time Is Gonna Come" - Led Zeppelin (1969)
  20. Sorry, Uncle Joe. I was replying to RonJonSurfer's psuedo-question in the second post.
  21. I believe, actually, that James Taylor was the first Apple signing. Mary Hopkin and Badfinger were right in there, though, so I'm not 100% sure about JT. Anyhoo...
  22. What about "Trouble" by Coldplay? That was a decent hit (and a great song) from the "Parachutes" album, and I don't think anyone said it yet.
