  1. It's this week's feature song. But you knew, you knew, you knew... oh, it just doesn't work when I do it.
  2. Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" is sung by Mickey Thomas, who went on to sing with Starship. Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" is sung by his guitarist - not sure if that counts. Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar" is sung by Roy Harper.
  3. Here's what I know about Ten Years After: They got their name because they formed in 1965, 10 years after the birth of Rock And Roll. Their song "I'd Love To Change The World" contains some really bizarre lyrics: "Life is funny, skies are sunny Bees make honey, who needs money, Monopoly"
  4. I haven't heard the song, but I believe Aurora is a suburb of Chicago that is not looked highly upon by its residents. It was the setting for the movie Wayne's World.
  5. The clean and comfortable Mighty Songfacts T-shirt goes to: Sari from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Here are the answers: What Beatles song was used in commercials for Nike? - "Revolution" Many people born after 1980 don't know this. What famous singer became a United States congressman? - Sonny Bono After his music career, he became a congressman from California. What famous singer was born with the first name "Myra"? - Tori Amos Her birth name is Myra Ellen Amos. Where did The Allman Brothers, The Band and The Grateful Dead play in front of 600,000 people? - Watkins Glen, NY It was the "Summer Jam" on July 28, 1973. What was the first video played on MTV that contained nothing but scenes from a movie? - "Maniac" by Michael Sembello. It contained nothing but scenes from Flashdance. Only a few people got this right. Songs from movies like Pretty In Pink, Footloose and Top Gun got lots of guesses. What song is about a high school student who brought a gun to school and killed 2 people in 1979? - "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats Most people guessed "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam. What famous singer named his first 3 solo albums after himself? - Peter Gabriel Barry Manilow named his first 2 after himself. What song contains the name of a Jamaican cooking pot in the title? - "Pass The Dutchie" by Musical Youth What hit from 1996 is being used as the theme song to a popular TV show in the US? - "One Of Us" The Joan Osborne song is the theme to the TV show Joan Of Arcadia. "I'll Be There For You," which is the theme song from Friends, came out in 1995. Who was the first British artist to top the US charts? - Vera Lynn We didn't phrase this question well. When we wrote it, we were looking for Mr. Acker Bilk, a clarinet player who hit #1 with "Stranger On The Shore" in 1962 (we knew most people would guess The Beatles). We should have specified Billboard Pop Charts, which started in 1955. Before then, there were charts for radio play, sales and jukebox play, and in 1952 a British Singer named Vera Lynn hit #1 with "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart." We accepted Acker Bilk. Thanks to everyone who took the quiz, and be sure to take the new one here.
  6. Thanks for the bug alert Slothchild. We have exterminated it. As soon as we figure out how to do it, we're going to accept lyrical pursuit questions from our wonderful users. We'll see how you all do at writing fake lyrics.
  7. For all you young songwriters and musicians, be careful who you sing for. There are lots of people waiting to steal your songs. Kenny Laguna told us the story of that one: "I was in a band with a friend of mine. The band was called The Nighthawks. He'd been in a band called Buffalongo, and Buffalongo had this song called 'Dancin' In The Moonlight.' So now, it's the '70, Disco is hot, Bubblegum is dead and I'm starving. We get this idea, we brought it in to RCA. We did it for RCA and these guys stole our idea. The next thing I know, there was another RCA band that had the hit. We didn't control the song, it had already been out, it wasn't our song."
  8. Thanks to Sara, the search features on the homepage have been redesigned to make Songfacts easier to navigate. These changes were made in response to feedback from users, and we thank you for your input. The big challenge was the browseable artist search, which should make it a lot easier to find songs by a particular artist. Let us know what you think.
  9. I'm a huge fan of '70s era funk/soul. Here are some of my favorites: James Brown - "Cold Sweat" LTD - "Back In Love Again" The Spinners - "Working My Way Back To You" The Ohio Players - "Love Rollercoaster" There's something about this stuff that can't be duplicated now. It has a genuine quality that can get lost with modern recording technology.
  10. You don't want to see that. Trust me.
  11. The new artist browse should be great once we get it working properly, and we're almost there. It will replace the unruly search box. Lyrical Pursuit is in the testing stages. This should be fun. The look and play will be similar to Song Fallacies. There's a good chance we are going to do another "Mighty Songfacts Easter Egg Hunt." Here's how this works: We come up with a list of clues that can be answered with the title of a song. For example, "How author Jack introduces himself on the phone" would be answered with "London Calling." Going to the song "London Calling" produces an egg, which lets you know that is the right answer. We have some ideas for clues, but can definitely use more. Please send us any you think of. We also have lots of new song information coming in, and we've done some more songwriter interviews. Thanks to our friendly moderators for helping on the boards, which frees up time for us to write code.
  12. Ollie, I get the sense that Hollywood and Madison Avenue make a concerted effort to include people of many colors in movies, TV shows and commercials. Think about it - if there's a car commercial and 4 friends (not family members) are in the vehicle, I can almost guarantee they will not all be the same color. I don't watch enough TV to comment, but movies seem to be the same thing. I read an article on race once where the author said that many people believe society is integrated because that's what we see on TV, but it's not so much the case in real life. Eventually, we'll all be brown and it won't be a big deal.
  13. Good question. I'm doing my best to get an interview with Mr. Derringer, and I'll be sure to ask him that. Don't be surprised, however, if the answer is something like "just a name we made up." Then again, there might be a great story behind it.
  14. That would make sense. I think we have a town here in Connecticut named after him (Cromwell, not Oliver). Thanks for the help Denmark.
  15. For a long time, we've relied on various experts to help us research questionable Songfacts we receive and in many cases, add more information. Songfacts has gotten more traffic lately and we could use more researchers to help out. On the about page under the "How can I contribute" section, we've added a link to a form where you can help us research songs as well. Here's the link. Please let us know if you'd like to help out. We can use experts in many areas - Pearl Jam, folk music, '80s, etc., as well as researchers for more general stuff. Thanks, Carl
  16. "There are only 2 things I hate - People who are intollerant of other cultures, and The Dutch." - Austin Powers' dad in "Goldmember" Sadly, I don't think we Americans have been exposed to much Dutch music (Does Jools Holland count? How about Pass The Dutchie by Musical Youth?). Part of the problem could be explained by what a friend of mine told me after spending a week in Amsterdam. I asked him if he had a good time and he said, "I'm pretty sure I did, but I don't remember." The Shocking Blue, who had the hit "Venus" were Dutch.
  17. There were 2 winners this month: Jake from Tecumseh, MI Theresa from Jenkintown, PA Both win a clean and comfortable Songfacts T-shirts for their efforts. Here are the answers: What female singer started a fashion trend in 2002 by wearing men's ties? - Avril Lavigne Who had the best-selling rap album of the '80s? - The Beastie Boys The album was License To Ill. Whenever we ask a question containing the words "rap" and "first," at least half the guesses are Run-DMC. What band's name means "Do You Remember?" - Husker Du It's Swedish. Fun wrong answers included Ya Lo Tengo, Kajagoogoo, Menudo and Rammstein. What was Madonna's first movie where she sang on camera? - Vision Quest She sang "Crazy For You" in a nightclub. Evita was a popular guess. What is the first year that CDs outsold vinyl records? - 1988 What famous group's keyboard player recently admitted he had a sex change operation? - Jethro Tull Their former keyboard player David Palmer is now known as Dee. What group's autobiography was a best-selling book in 2001? - Motley Crue It's called The Dirt. When he was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, who said, "They?re not playing rock 'n' roll anymore. Everything is push the buttons. Take away all their fuzz pedals these days, and they?d be lost up there on stage"? - Bo Diddley What famous singer recently spent 2 days in jail for drunk driving? - Diana Ross What popular all-female band has a member named Michael? - The Bangles Michael Steel, who was also a member of The Runaways (which we accepted), is their bass player. Thanks to everyone who took the quiz, and be sure to take the new one here.
  18. Perhaps one of our British friends can answer this one- In the Elvis Costello song "Olvier's Army," who is Oliver?
  19. Last I heard, Dickie had his own band, The Dickie Betts Band, and was playing small theaters on occasion. I ran into his drummer a while ago, and he told me Dickie was doing well. I think it's unlikely that he will return to the Allman Brothers, because it seems Gregg has his mind made up. Hopefully, Dickie will get the recognition he deserves as not only a guitar player, but a talented songwriter as well. He's written some classics, including "Blue Sky" and "Jessica." It's clear The Allman Brothers are much greater than the sum of their parts, and this works against any member on his own. I hope Dickie's story ends well.
  20. Andrew- That is a great idea. I'm confused about the XML. Can you explain the "dump" and what that's all about? Songfacts looks like it should definitely be on that site, and if you could help us out with it, that'd be a big help.
  21. In the old days, DJs were real people who played the songs by cuing up the albums just like everyone else. Being human, they often liked to hear songs that flowed seamlessly on the record played together, and that's how listeners came to expect it. That's what happened with these Queen songs, but they are definitely 2 separate songs. Other songs that got grouped together: Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band/A Little Help From My Friends (The Beatles) Eruption/You Really Got Me (Van Halen) Heartbreaker/Livin' Lovin' Maid (Led Zeppelin)
  22. First of all, make it very clear to your DJ that he/she will not, under any circumstances, play "Paradise By The Dashboard Light," "The Chicken Dance," or anything by The Village People, especially "YMCA." Here are some songs that I feel express genuine sentiment and can make great wedding songs: "You Send Me" by Sam Cooke "At Last" by Etta James "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" by Rod Stewart "Sweetest Thing" by U2 - especially if you have brown eyes and his are blue "Two Hearts" by Bruce Springsteen "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers I applaud your effort to take control of the music at your wedding. It's amazing how many people don't and end up listening to way too many selections from Rick Springfield's Working Class Dog album.

    New listings

I have 2 concerns about this, both of which I should probably get over. The first thing I'm worried about is diluting the value of the newsletter. The second is the appearance that the database is not being updated. We are constantly working on the database and adding new songs, but putting it online takes some effort and is something we want to do only once a week or 2. I'm a little worried that people will see that no songs have been added for a week and think we are one of these sites that hasn't changed since 1998. If anyone has any ideas on how we could present something like this, please let us know, it will help us out as we redesign the homepage.
  24. Let's take it back a step and say they were all inspired by American Blues music, especially Chuck Berry. "Big 10 Inch Record," "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," "Hard To Handle" - all covers of Blues or Soul records, which is a way for them to pay tribute to their influences. All 3 bands also have preening lead singers who overacheive in a big way when it comes to the ladies. Steven Tyler took a lot of heat for being a Mick Jagger clone, but I think he's made quite a mark on his own.
  25. That's "California" by Phantom Planet. Check out the Songfacts, it's been around for a few years and has been used in some other stuff as well.
