  1. Anything by Smokey Robinson. His early lyrics were incredibly ingenious.

Anything by The Style Council. I looooove Paul Weller!

    Anthing by Jim Croce.

And if you ever get the chance, listen to an old Tango by Carlos Gardel: "Volver" I believe it's from around 1920, but it's incredibly poetic and it certainly has the best song lyrics I ever heard.

    Quote

    Vivir ...

    con el alma aferrada

    a un dulce recuerdo

    que lloro otra vez...

    Volver, con la frente marchita

las nieves del tiempo platearon mi sien.

Sentir, que es un soplo la vida

    etc.

  2. Motown is my middle name! I believe I know every Mowtown song there is, starting with Stevie Wonder's incredible "Contract on Love" from 1962. (How old was he? 12? He was just awesome with that beautiful young voice)

I recently bought "The Temptations sing Smokey", a compilation of songs written by Smokey Robinson, that includes the glorious "You beat me to the punch" and "What love has joined together". My brother has every Motown album (vynil) that was ever released. ::

One of my all-time favourites is Jimmy Ruffin's "What becomes of the broken-hearted." When my daughter was in Kindergarten, I used to drive her and she would always request that song on the way. So there we sat, mother and daughter, going to school and work respectively and singing What becomes of the broken-hearted at the top of our lungs!

    :happybanana: :happybanana:

  3. Landscape also did that kind of music... They had a hit, "Einstein a go-go", maybe XXX and Diggs will remember it... I also liked Erasure and their first album, they had something to do with Yazoo or Depeche Mode... maybe Vince Clarke was part of it with that Bronsky Beat singer whose name I don´t remember????? Oh, forgive me, JuanJuanJuan, I´m like a old fashioned computer full of very interesting information! :googly: :googly:

Bronsky Beat singer was Jimmy Summerville.

  4. The best to come from Spain is Miguel Bose! I think he wasn't born in Spain, though. So add Miguel Gallardo and Camilo Sesto into the mix ::

I beg to differ. If Miguel Bosé is the best and Miguel Gallardo and Camilo Sesto are cool, we're not on the same wave length. By the way, Miguel Bosé was born in Panama by chance, because his father (bullfighter Luis Miguel Dominguín) was touring Latin America that spring, before bull fighting season started in Spain. His godfather was none other than Pablo Ruiz PICASSO.

  5. Alaska y Dinarama is the best spanish group. they wrere "y los Pegamoides" before and now it´s "Fangoria". I love them (I really do coz some of them have been good friends of mine) It´s kind of funky but if you an download them, great. Fangoria did the whole arrangements for that awfull "Macarena" and los del Río (the ones who sung it) didn´t want to pay the royalties or something and they´ve been sued... bad boys, tss...

Hey Edna, I totally agree! Alaska & Dinarama and Alaska & Los Pegamoides were the best pop-rock act in this country ever.

The songs "Bailando", "A quíén le importa", "Ni tú, ni nadie" are incredible in as all aspects, the lyrics, the melody, the rythm, just perfect!

For those of you who understand Spanish:

    BAILANDO

    Bailando.

    Me paso el día bailando.

    Y los vecinos mientras tanto.

    No paran de molestar.

    Bebiendo.

Bailando... (Alaska y los Pegamoides, 1982)

  6. My brother laughed himself silly once because I had bought one of those "Hits of the 60's" compilations, that included nothing but crummy songs, but it also had "Excerpt from a Teenage Opera", which I used to love as a kid, so I couldn't resist it. I bore the humiliation stoically, and got my revenge 20 years later when I found a record by The Carpenters in his very extensive, exquisite vinyls collection. He came out with a lame excuse, saying he had just bought it because Karen Carpenter's voice was unusual. Duuuhhh! Karen Carpenter had a wonderful voice, but their songs were kitsch and I caught him buying kitsch!

  7. What style are you looking for?

    Folk, Cuban, rock, flamenco, pop?

I can think of these right now:

Mex. Folk : La Bamba, La Cucaracha, Cielito Lindo, Las Mañanitas, anything by Pedro Infante or Jorge Negrete

Cuban: Angelitos Negros, Maria Cristina, Esperanza, anything by Antonio Machín, Ibrahim Ferrer, or Buena Vista Social Club, Bebo Valdés, Pérez Prado

US pop-rock: Anything by Santana, Suavecito (Malo), Los Lobos, Maná, (José Feliciano ?)

Flamenco: Paco de Lucía, Niña Pastori, Camarón, Enrique Morente, Estrella Morente, El Lebrijano, El Cigala

Pop: Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Luz Casal, Amaral, Mocedades, Golpes Bajos, Alaska, Tequila

Spanish folk: Los Sabandeños (Canary Islands), Hevia (Asturian Bagpipe), Orfeon Donostiarra (Habaneras - seamen's songs), Tunas of any University (Clavelitos, Fonseca, No te enamores Compostelana, etc.)

I'll probably remember a million more in a while.

  8. Apotheosis? Apotheosis?? Teresa, you're scaring me. [/qu ote]

    :) :) Apotheosis wasn't the right word, was it? :: ::

I just remember how impressed I was then to see all these people play together. You have to remember that back in the 80's those sessions were not an everyday thing, in fact they were quite a novelty. Of course what they played was crap, but I loved it at the time.

  9. Best Picture: The Aviator

    Best Actor: Don Cheadle

    Best Actress: Kate Winslet

    Best Supporting Actor: Morgan Freeman

    Best Supporting Actress: Sophie Okonedo

    Best Director: Martin Scorsese

Best Orig. Score: Finding Neverland Jan Kaczmarek

Best Orig. Song: Look to your Path

  10. I believe my previous post on Alison was lost in the Ether. Anyway.... I recently bought a DVD with the Prince's Trust Rock Gala from 1987 (I believe), that included Alison Moyet, and many of the top acts of Brit Pop. It's a great video, I bought it especially because of her, but I enjoyed the whole thing, Paul Young, Mark King, and of course the final apotheosis with Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Ringo Starr, George Harrison et al.

  11. I've got hundreds - can't say which one of these I like best:

Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles

    Specials - Specials

    1999 - Prince

Cakewalk into Town - Taj Mahal

    August - Eric Clapton

    The Best of Santana

The Raw & The Cooked - Fine Young Cannibals

    Greatest Hits - Al Green

    All Tears for Fears albums

    All Otis Redding albums

    All Culture Club (so underrated!)

All Jimi Hendrix.......It's impossible to have only one favourite album!!!!!!

    :guitar:

  12. Good, passionate stuff. I would only change the line:

...Your figure, your form, BLESSED IN THE LEAST?

As I understand it, you are saying that her/his figure and form are not exactly attractive. So, if I misunderstood it, somebody else might too.

  13. One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest was my favourite for years. I've never seen a more talented cast in my life - Danny de Vito was incredible!

But since I'm becoming nostalgic (getting old, I guess) I have been buying DVDs of my childhood favourites, and I just got to say what great movies they were!

My favourites are all films starring Hayley Mills, especially Tiger Bay.

...and I wouldn't be a gal if I didn't love those "Sissy" movies of the 60's, starring teenage Romy Schneider as Empress Elizabeth "Sissy" of Austria.

I almost forgot Monty Python's "Life of Brian" (any MP movie for that matter). That movie is still a riot!

  14. I believe you will like the monks choir of Santo Domingo de Silos. A few years ago they released an album with Deutsche Grammophon called "The mystery of Sto. Domingo de Silos" which was entirely Gregorian chants in Latin. It became a hit record. I especially like the Kyrie and the Pater Noster. Check it out.

  15. I'm not sure I understood if the CD is for a guy or a girl.

If it's for a guy: you know guys don't need music to get in the mood! ;) You can play the Radetzky March full blast and they still won't even hear it, much less be distracted!

And if it's for a gal: - I always found Marvin Gaye's "Distant Lover" (the live version) super-sensual and irresistible.

  16. The prevailing sentiment seems to be loathing for Katrina and the Wave; but that aside, anytime I hear the beginning of "Walking On Sunshine" I have the desire to dance. I love the energy of that song. It feels ... it feels ... GOOD!

Walking on Sunshine was a great song! Didn't they win Eurovision Song Contest or something of the kind?
