According to the Daily Mail, pop songs are way more popular than hymns when it comes to picking songs for funerals in 2016. After Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” “Time To Say Goodbye” by Andrea Boccelli and Sarah Brightman was number two on the list. Rounding out the Top 3 was Eva Cassidy’s, “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” The results were drawn from a survey of 300 British Co-op funeral directors and 2,000 adults.
And it isn’t just classics that are getting chosen as swansongs. Contemporary pop songs are also being played a lot at funerals as well. The list of sought after funeral songs also includes Robbie Williams, Westlife, Adele, and Rihanna songs. The survey also notes that song choices are also being influenced by the deaths of popular celebrities.

“Wiz Khalifa’s track ‘See You Again,’ dedicated to the late Paul Walker, has made it into the contemporary pop charts whilst the late David Bowie’s ‘Ashes To Ashes’ has also been requested by clients in the last 12 months,” said David Collingwood, co-op funeral chief.

Hymns are still among some of the go-to songs at funerals with “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” “Abide With Me” and “All Things Bright And Beautiful” still common picks. But the trend is skewing towards songs that meant something to the life of the person who died.

“Funerals are very much about personal choice and reflecting the personality, hobbies and interests of a person,” Collingwood said. “More so than ever we’re seeing people pre-plan their funeral music and, in the last 12 months, 42 per cent of our funeral directors and arrangers have received ready-made pre-planned funeral playlists.

I felt that I really needed to post on this as my mum recently told me she wanted to have 'I did it my way " when she passed; it is a  beautiful song and it does really reflect well on mu mum as she can be known to be... shall we say " Quiet Stubborn " lol.

We lost my dad quite suddenly in July 2018 after a four month battle with cancer 😪 We were and still are shattered, my dad chose to have Macho Man by the Village people as he was taken from the church, the whole place was laughing hysterically; that was my dad though; always wanted to make the best of a bad situation, and as it was my mum and his second marriage, it was a fairly casual occasion  and they had Macho Man as their wedding song lol, very romantic. LOL

    I miss you  Daddy

This place was *way* ahead of it's time. Songfacts was a kind of facebook before facebook was facebook, but for music freaks. Then a few things happened. We had a server change and the format of our beloved Songfacts boards changed. They weren't like what you see here. Then facebook came along, and with it a songfacts facebook thing. I think the posts became fewer and farther in between. I still come here, I don't always "officially" sign in, but I am usually here once a day. There was a tight vibe for quite some time. A tribal vibe, kind of a family type deal.

    Thanks Ken 😊

Cat Stevens? I thought it was Rod Stewart that sang that song?

To me it sounds like someone got their heart broken so badly that it made them unable or unsure about loving another person again.

I  thought it was Rod Stewart as well

When I prepare for an interview, at some point the essence of the subject becomes clear, and I know what I want to ask. It took me a few days to get there with Adam Duritz.

Most of us have some overarching theme that comes through in our worldview, and songwriters often express that in their songs. For much of Adam's career, this was the burden of fame, as Counting Crows released one of the best-selling debut albums of all-time, and in a short period of time, Adam's intimate moments became public - not just in his terrestrial life, but also in his songs.

But that was a long time ago.

Now that the adulation has subsided, Adam has become more guarded in his creative output, which means he won't just pour his heart out in a song and foist it on the public. The last Counting Crows album was all cover songs, which spared him this burden.

This all stems from Adam's revelation that his songs are all about him. He doesn't enter the mind of someone else, and he doesn't write on spec (even that Shrek song delved into his psyche).

When I spoke with Adam yesterday, I was happy to hear him expound on upcoming projects with a newfound passion. With that out of the way, we explored songwriting technique, where he explained that it's the rich, authentic details that matter. Adam mentions real and specific people and places in his songs (Anna, the New Amsterdam), which is what paints their vibrant colors. And yes, Springsteen came up in this conversation.

I'll post the link once we put this together, but wanted to share some of these thoughts while they were still fresh.

As an aside, if you were to put boy parts together to create the perfect specimen that would attract beautiful actresses, you would end up with the 1994-1996 version of Adam. His combination of mystery and talent landed him two Friends stars when the show was the hottest thing on TV, plus Mary Louise Parker, Samantha Mathis, and a few others he remains coy about.

  7. Has anyone seen Nick  Cave's  Conversations tour? I was just wondering and I can't seem to find out  too much. It's an intimate gig, and therefore it's been advertised as a solo so he can  interact with the audience, but I know he will perform a couple of numbers, what I'm dying to know is if he'll have Warren Ellis with him, those two are practically joined at the hip, they seem to almost have some sort of mental telepathy happening, It would be AMAZING if he came out to Australia with Nick and of course I'm hoping the gorgeous Susie Bick  attends.

I am totally heartbroken by the amount of songs that have been about suicide!

You just never really realize do you? Please reach out if you need some one

It's not a suicide song but if I was to pass away, I would love Nick Cave to  read my Eulogy lol. My best  friend wants  Morgan  Freeman and my other friend wants James Earl  Jones.  I could listen to Nick forever, there's nothing more sexy than a well spoken person.!!!!! SORRY I had to get that out lol

Here's the place to give us your suggestions for topics and themes, as well as other suggestions, so they don't get lost in the shuffle. :)

With our last two lists, Songfactors' Choice has really gained popularity. So far we've done:

    • Best Soundtracks
    • Christmas Wish List
    • Holiday Special
    • The Very Best of 2007
    • Women Gone Wild!
    • Distinctive Debuts

We need ideas for universal themes, to encourage the great participation we've been getting. Obviously, the more popular the topic, the more nominations (such as the last two lists) we get, which is the whole point.

Which leads to the suggestion of lists of 10, rather than 5. It's great idea... as long as we have the participation to support it. So we have suggestion #1, which is under serious advisement. :)

    Give us whatcha got! ;)

Zhivko created an RSS feed for our Songwriter Interviews and feature stories, which includes the Songfactor's Choice.

On any interview, just click the little RSS icon:

This means every time we post an interview or story, it will show up in your feed reader, which in my case is my Yahoo home page. This RSS thing is a good way to find out when a new post happens without having to constantly check the blog. Post here if you want to know more. :)
