  1. working out the  chords on a  piano  makes me  realise  what  a  fab

    song  this  is

( the lead singer  of  Manfred Man ... Paul  Jones  ... had a  big  hit  with it  back in the  day  )

    anyone got any info ?

  2. something is nt right,

I recently posted 2 topics, hit subscribe to topic etc but they aint on my subscription list .

dont think I got e mail notif of responses to this topic either .

But e mail notif is at least partly working on this forum, just got e mail notif for topic .... random video posts

  3. Carol is pretty high up on my list of

    Rock Babes....

that main of red hair... that voice...

Recently saw a vid of her in concert...

black stockings, black hi heel boots... mini skirt... singing and walking backwards across the stage....!

How cute is that babe ?

I thought maybe she was writing those fab songs back in the 80s ... just like I thought maybe Blondie was writing their fab songs too.

But I suspect both Carol and Debbie are in the song credits for contributing lyrics... dont think they are the main power behind the songs....... am I wrong ?

But they are both stunning Rock Goddesses...!

  4. Wonderful biog type prog about Jeff last

fri 5 oct on UK TV ... filmed for the most

part in his fabulous home overlooking LA ( I believe )

You could see a few sky scrapers in the distance.

We learned a lot about his life... teaming up

with Roy Wood for ELO ... Roy did nt hang around very long.

He showed us the guitar his dad bought him... for £2 and an antiquated tape recorder from the 60s which would actually allow him to multi-track !

What a brilliant guy, musician, song writer, producer.... performer.

  5. The original group seemed to split up

    and half became Heaven 17.

But Phil Oakley stayed on and built up the

    bands success.

He had the vision and the staying power, without

him Human League would never have happened .

I read that he had affairs with both Joanne

    and Suzanne... lucky devil.

He was a big fan of Abba who had a blonde and a

    brunette fronting the band

( so Phil recruited a blonde and a brunette )

The formula worked and throughout the 1980s Human League put Sheffield

    firmly on the pop map

  6. A very popular guy in the 60s and 70s,

great jazz/ bluebeat sound and one great voice.

Bet he was a hot act in clubs and cabaret and prob still has a loyal following to this day !

Wonder how hot he was on the old keyboards ?

  7. Jim Steinman had quite a few hits in the 1980s...

maybe some of his best work was with Bonny Tyler.....

Total Eclipse of the Heart..... Faster than the Speed of Night...

Im holding on for a Hero ....

Andy Webber approached him .. back in the 1980s .....to work as lyricist on Phantom of the Opera

but Jim turned him down ............ ( bad career move Jim ! )

Very sad if the guy is unwell these days... just those 3 songs of Bonny Tylers are all classics and they put a bit of umph into the 1980s.

The guy is no mean pianist either !

  8. Wonderful forum... big up to the guys

and gals who got it together

can't help thinking though that there should

be seperate forums for each decade

    ie

    1950s forum

    1960s forum

    1970s

    1980s

    1990s

.... it would kind of 'concentrate the mind'..

and everyone has their own favourite era

( usu the decade they were teenagers in ! )

  9. Mike Stock ( of Stock/Aitkin/Waterman fame)

has been in a few papers lately talking about

how the music industry is turning to porn

    with so many raunchy singers...

    Katie Perry, Madonna, etc

Their videos and stage acts are becoming overtly pornographic

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1301974/Mike-Stock-Pop-charts-porn-putting-children-risk.html

There seem to be so many female singers around now, Diana Vickers, Lady Gaga, Lily Allen,Taylor Swift

The female names go on and on.

Record sales have fallen dramatically, is the music industry now more about selling sex and sleaze ?

  10. Just listening to the song..

I dreamed I saw the silver space ships....

one of the classics of the 1970s without doubt...

but listening to the record it all seems very amature.

Neil's voice is just passable I suppose,

there's a piano in there... then the French horn ? comes in....

    It all seems very basic.

I seem to remember reading an article that Neil

was recording in a barn in the 70s ... with bales of hay piled up for soundproofing...

maybe he was in the barn for that very basic recording.

The song is up there with John Lennon's finest,

just imagine ... if John had wrote it...

just imagine the mega production that George Martin and EMI would have laid on........

    orchestras... heavenly choirs....

they would have pulled out all the stops for such a wonderful song.
