  1. So unknown songs are welcome as well? Check out Dutch pop-history: Diesel: Sausolito Summernight: Patricia Paay: Malibu:
  2. Here's a 1972 contribution by Dutch singer/songwriter Alexander Curly, I'll never drink again. How about this rhyme? God, I don't remember where I went Or how much money I must have spent I don't suppose that it was a bit Still got a feeling that I'm going to vomit
  3. Pietsie te laat, maar niet minder van harte: Gefeliciflapsitaart!
  4. From the 3 shows I've seen in the last 8 years and the dvd's that came with them, I have the impression that the rough rock 'n roll alco-attitude is carefully cultivated by Keith. You can't perform like that, at that age, on a diet of a daily bottle of whiskey at breakfast at 3:30 PM.
  5. This week a sixties hitrecord of The Troggs was played on nostalgia radio: Anyway that you want me. I remembered how puzzled I was by the lyrics, and decided to check them. The puzzling words are: "I've been watching you, and I don't think that you're game....". Puzzling if you don't know the English expression "to be game", and your ears hear instead: "I've been watching you, and I don't think that you're gay.....".
  6. Going Up The Country has a nice flute. Is a flute woodwind? The flute is made of metal. Nice woodwind can be heard in "Little Man", by Sonny and Cher. Is it an oboe or a bassoon ?
  7. Wesley Willis murdered an entire family. But he confessed.... Once upon a time, I went on a murder spree I was on a shooting rampage I came to your house with my Smith & Wesson I was a stupid-ass drunk when I was trigger-happy I murdered your family I murdered your family I murdered your family I murdered your family At 12:00 midnight, I invaded your home I capped your brother and sister I then stalked your mom and dad with the same handgun Suddenly, I capped both of them in the head I murdered your family I murdered your family I murdered your family I murdered your family When the police pulled up, I was done for They arrested me on four murder charges They carted me off to jail They locked me up for killing four innocent people I murdered your family I murdered your family I murdered your family I murdered your family And there are more murders and acts of violence in his repertoire.....
  8. Johnny Cash "shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die...", in Folsom Prison Blues.
  9. I am very much enjoying We Wish you a Metal Xmas and a Headbanging New Year, which is a compilation album of Christmas songs played by an all-star collection of hard rock and metal artists. Run Rudolph Run is performed by Lemmy Kilmister, Billy F. Gibbons and Dave Grohl. And Silent Night, Holy Night is grunted by Chuck Billy.
  10. In the comments on the SongFacts of the Beatles' hit Yellow Submarine Olle from Sweden remarked that in the middle part of the song (the underwater sound scenery) a Swedish shout was heard, according to many Sedish fans at the time. At 1:46 in this recording ( ) one is supposed to hear something like "Hasse, stäng darren, Hasse, stäng darren". At that same time there was a strong rumour in The Netherlands, that a Dutch technician in the studio at that particular moment had uttered a Dutch shout: "Hou ze tegen, hou ze tegen.." (meaning something like: someone stop them....). I can't imagine any other language being spoken than English. However I cannot find out what exactly is said in this studio play. Does anybody know?
  11. He's been popular in The Netherlands for over 20 years now. My son saw his show in the Amsterdam Carré Theatre 5 years ago, working as a light technician. "The people on the most expensive front seats", he reported, "have heard him well, but only seen his shoes. Paolo Conte played the piano facing the audience, he was not seen of aside, as piano players usually are on stage". And yes, it was a fantastic concerto.
  12. There's just one Xmas song that I like. Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody
  13. And if I would like to know more about a specific song, this forum would be the place to ask for it, is that correct? If anyone could write an entry with background information on Lou Reed's fantastic song Strawman, I'd love it. I can't find anything explaining what caused him to write these angry lyrics.
  14. 10CC's Graham Gouldman wrote great hits. So did John Fogerty.
  15. Cozy Powell had a hitrecord with Dance with the Devil, . The chorus of this song is an exact copy of the guitar chorus of Jimi Hendrix' Third Stone from the Sun, from 1967: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUg7xl4kKUw . This is simply acknowledged as a fact in wikipedia. I cannot remember any fuzz about plagiarism, when Dance with the Devil was released in 1974. What was it then, ignored plagiarism, or permitted reuse of a wonderful melody line, or anything inbetween?
  16. Both Janis Joplin and the dutch band Brainbox with guitarist Jan Akkerman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46gYx_QKbJ4) recorded the George Gershwin song Summertime.
  17. The Final Countdown, by Europe, has a guitarsolo that has nothing to do with the rest of the song.
  18. Paul Simons' 50 ways to leave your lover has some names in the text. I once read somewhere that the song was written to explain to his son what exactly "rhyme" is. "Just slip out the back, Jack Make a new plan, Stan You dont need to be coy, Roy Just get yourself free Hop on the bus, Gus You dont need to discuss much Just drop off the key, Lee And get yourself free"
  19. Let's hope this incident has a similar consequence as the one that made him write "When the ship comes in", in 1963. I'm looking forward to his new recordings!
  20. Ouch, that's Elton John..... Oooff, singing soul..... Well OK, great bass, that's true If I were a starting bassplayer, I'd try Bill Wyman's lines in "I'm a King Bee".
  21. American singer and songwriter Willy DeVille died of pancreas cancer during the night of August 6th in a New York hospital. Born August 25th, 1950, DeVille began his career in New York in the mid-70's with his band Mink DeVille, garnering success in Europe with songs such as Spanish Stroll (1977), and later in the United States with his album Le Chat Bleu (1980), which blended punk rock with elements from French cabaret tradition such as accordion. DeVille then pursued a career under his own name, releasing albums on a regular basis until 2008, and once more hitting the Europeans charts with a mariachi cover version of traditional song Hey Joe in 1992. This is sad news. I will remember him from this fantastic concert I saw, some seven years ago. He was one of the few singers that are both a joy to listen to and fascinating to watch moving around on stage.
  22. A real good handclapping song seems to me: Santa Esmeralda's Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. The first part of this clip gives a hint why. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8NVQ0iao0g Where the clips stops, the album version continues with minutes of Andalusian handclapping. Olé!
  23. Marilyn Manson threatens to kill journalists that make up stories about him. He wrote on his MySpace blog: "I can, but do not need to defend myself And the absurd accusations that the average press has clinged onto. If we need a nude photo of me to prove that I am far different than the soon-to-be-murdered-in-their-home press has decided to fabricate, that is easy. But if one more "journalist" makes a cavalier statement about me and my band, I will personally or with my fans help, greet them at their home and discover just how much they believe in their freedom of speech. I dare you all to write one more thing that you won't say to my face. Because I will make you say it. In that manner. That is a threat. Mm "
