  1. Yep, gotta agree with the Beatles.
  2. Uncle Joe nailed it for me. If you can't relax to a good bossa nova or jazz samba album you need further medication. Get yourself one of the Astrud Gilberto compilation cd's it will melt you into a puddle. Since I list myself as Jazzcat I'll stick to the jazz genre and leave some of the rock stuff for you other folks but here are a few other suggestions. Gary Burton and Chick Corea - Crystal Silence Jane Monheit - Never Never Land Chet Baker - My Funny Valentine (Pacific Jazz compilation) Bill Evans - Moonbeams Stan Getz - lots of his I'll say Best of Two Worlds lp George Shearing - Try the Capitol "Best of: vol 2" Marian McPartland - On 52nd Street Milt Jackson - Sunflower Wes Montgomery - Road Song Count Basie - April in Paris Keith Jarrett - not for every taste but try "the Koln Concert"
  3. "Is That You, Santa Claus?" Louis Armstrong. May be a little tough to find but a fun song by a classic performer.
  4. Dave Mason had a way cool flute solo in his song "Show Me Some Affection".
  5. Waiting for Columbus - Little Feat Chicago Transit Authority - Chicago Greg Allman On Tour- G. Allman (probably still some seeds in that one )
  6. The "Push Push" album was in a lot of record collections in the 70's. Hubert Laws also had some rock/fusion elements in some of his stuff.
  7. Don't forget flute use in Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues, Moondance by Van Morrison and a few Chicago tunes as well.
  8. A fair amount of people credit "Good Rockin' Tonight" by Roy Brown. Recorded in 1947. Lots of others would say "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley & the Comets in 1954 as the first R&R "hit".
  9. OK got the definitions but any other thoughts on the basis of the song. Bad experiences at Bard, the girl, etc?
  10. Chambers Bros. Time Has Come Today
  11. Does anyone have any insight on the background of the song "My Old School" by Steely Dan? It sure sounds like lyrics were based on life experience.
  12. Vincent by Don McClean written about Van Gogh.
  13. Oh hey, how about Run DMC and Aerosmith. Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson (bet Paul wishes he could have a "do over" on that choice).
  14. Elvis Costello has done some things with unexpected partners. Burt Bacharach for one and I think he also appeared on an album by the late Chet Baker. Bowie and Bing was a classic. Come to think of it I believe Sting has had some unusual collaborations but I can't think of any off-hand.
  15. From the Beatles: She Loves You, "pride can hurt you too". It didn't make any sense but I thought they said "try from her to do". I just thought it was a British thing.
  16. Yes, an excellent example. It does make you wonder what some of these folks would have gone on to do if they survived. Charlie Parker (1920-55) would be 84 years old if he would have survived drug addiction. I can only hope he wouldn't have finished his career playing Cindy Lauper songs like Miles did.

  18. Basically a riff tune but highlighted by Bobby Hackett's unforgettable cornet solo.
  19. Just thought of another tune that you should listen to. "I'll See You In My Dreams". This song has the "no dry eyes" guarantee stamped all over it. I was reminded of it because it was played at the end of the Concert for George tribute to George Harrison.
  20. String of Pearls is a great tune but is actually a "swing" tune. I think perhaps a better choice from Miller would be his haunting theme song "Moonlight Serenade". You should be able to find this tune pretty easily. Another song that could be appropiate is "Poor Butterfly". It has a very pleasant melody that is definitely worth a listen.
  21. Bix Beiderbecke (1903-1931) died from complications of chronic alcoholism at age 28. Arguably the first great white jazz musician and still emulated by jazz musicians to this day. As Louis Armstrong said "ain't nobody played like him yet". His story is a classic and tragic tale of genius being cut short by excess of addiction and not unlike Hendrix, Morrison, Cobain, and many other more recent examples.

    War Films

Some of these may seem cornball or old fasioned in the face of the current crop of movies that show guys heads getting blown off etc. But some of my favorite war movies are: Dawn Patrol Dr. Strangelove Zulu Mr. Roberts
  23. Kickin' The Gong Around- Cab Calloway Viper's Drag- Fats Waller Who Put the Benzedrine In Mrs. Murphy's Ovaltine- Harry "The Hipster" Gibson
