  1. " Those Were The Days" - Mary Hopkin

Haunting melody with sing/hum along lyrics that I recall leaving me feeling sadly sentimental -- even as a kid ! Rarely gets alot of airplay on radio as well, which makes it a real treat. I like to go into a daydream of a dark, musty, Parisian tavern full of world-weary patrons while listening.

  2. One of the great aspects of DVD are the bonus materials that many of them offer such as; interviews, deleted scenes, 'making of' features, commentaries, etc. Some are packed with them while others are few or non-existant.

With the holiday season coming (and Boxing Day/ New Year Sales) , does anyone have some suggestions of DVDs which they recommend,or equally helpful not recommend, based on the bonus features ?

    Good: Pirates of the Carribean

Many of the classic Universal horrors

    Chicago

Poor / disappointing: The Pink Panther boxed set

  3. Oh, you're all sadly misinformed. Most sources agree that it was Raymond of Toulon (1173 - 1224). Though his debut performances were unheralded, most reviews agree that his concert in support of the Third Crusade (1198) was "simply sublime, a real tour de force; who wouldn't want a go at the heathen after a show like that ? Hold me back cardinal, I may just have to bang my head" (Innocent III, Pope) .

  4. One of those songs which I used to like, but after living in Asia for long enough (where they view simple, melodic western tunes as god-like---don't get me started on the Beatles!) , find a forced, streched grin on my face when played.

Stand and Deliver -- Adam and the Ants

  5. Sound system didn't flatter The Who at all.! :coolio:

Having just watched this video again, I'd like to recant my earlier statement ( that'll teach me for basing opinions on recollection rather than a recent viewing). The Who were very good ! I guess I had in mind the stadium-rock sound systems which were to follow( !?)

Anyway, this video is a gem if you haven't seen it yet, rent or buy it ! Historically, it is important as it will really give you a glimpse of very late (December) 1968 if you're at all interested. For Beatles fans there is a disgruntled, isolated John Lennon,( one can sense) already wanting to get away from the Beatles, thus nullifying any media-generated speculation/ rivalries, etc. with other groups -- namely the Stones ( though what Paul thought at this time is anyone's guess !)

Taj Mahal --totally forgot their name, though not their perfomance. What became of them--damn good, though.

If you like the Stones, and not just a little, get this video. I can only describe the performances as PURE. I was blown away by 'Jumping Jack Flash', ' Parachute Woman'.... hell, all of them !

BTW: I read that the BBC, who put out the cash for this production, shelved it due to 'offensive content and/ or wording' . Little did they know that the times were' a changin'...."It's Monty Phython's Flying Circussssssss."

    :)

  6. Recently I've started collecting B movies as it has occurred to me that the big hits are often easily available for rental ( though some B's are there also), or are / will be appearing on your cable movie channels,etc.eventually. However, just like the secluded stacks of a library, there are a number of gems out there ( for better or worse) that I get a real kick out of -- especially some of the titles/ acting/ artwork on the covers. Priceless ! Any favorites out there ?

:beatnik: For starters: "1,000,000 Years B.C" - Raquel Welch

    " Barbarella" - Jane Fonda

    " Frankenstein Must Die ! " - Peter Cushing

" The Golden Voyage of Sinbad" - ?

" Plan 9 From Outer Space " - Bela Lugosi

  7. Loved some of those movies, PF. Especially:

    "Bedknobs and Broomsticks"-- Angela Lansbury

    "Blackbeard's Ghost "-- Peter Ustinov/ Dean Jones

The animated "Robin Hood"/ "The Sword in the Stone"/" The Aristocats"

Any of the Davey Crockett series ( or was it Daniel Boone ?)

"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" -- James Mason/ Kirk Douglas

I do recall groaning , though, when it was one of those animal adventures , quasi- documentaries !

As a side note, anyone remember those little booklets with the 45 RPM record based on Disney stories/movies ? ::

P.S Muzik :" I'm the king of the swingers, the jungle V.I.P., I've reached the top, and had to stop..and that's what's bothering me ..." Weren't some of these songs written by Hoagy Carmicheal ?

  8. Melcher once rented the home where actress Sharon Tate and a group of her friends were murdered by Manson followers.

Wow ! :: It's really surprising to hear another connection to add to the many that surrounded that incident and group of people.
