  1. "Forgiven" You know how us Catholic girls can be We make up for so much time a little too late I never forgot it, confusing as it was No fun with no guilt feelings The sinners, the saviors, the loverless priests I'll see you next Sunday We all had our reasons to be there We all had a thing or two to learn We all needed something to cling to So we did I sang Alleluia in the choir I confessed my darkest deeds to an envious man My brothers they never went blind for what they did But I may as well have In the name of the Father, the Skeptic and the Son I had one more stupid question We all had our reasons to be there We all had a thing or two to learn We all needed something to cling to So we did What I learned I rejected but I believe again I will suffer the consequence of this inquisition If I jump in this fountain, will I be forgiven We all had our reasons to be there We all had a thing or two to learn We all needed something to cling to So we did We all had delusions in our head We all had our minds made up for us We had to believe in something So we did in my view this is a very cynical look at the catholic church, the lessons it teaches people and the reasons people turn to it. all these people are looking for something 'to cling to' so they look to the church for guidance. they are variously sinful, hypocritical, deluded, self-righteous. yet they view it as a demonstration of their 'goodness' that they unfailingly attend church every sunday. traditional catholic guilt means that the schoolgirls canno njoy life without feeling guilty. singing alleluia in the choir while committing dark deeds represents hypocrisy. the bit about confessing her darkest deeds to an envious man refers to confession - she should be seeking absolution from a priest bu instead he is jealous, perhaps wishing he could do those things himself. nobody is pure of mind or spirit, least of all the priests. the line about the brothers is obviously a reference to the old threat that you would go blind from masturbating. they never did go blind but in contrast, the author has been figuratively blinded by the teachings of the church. basically, it questions both the blind faith of people who take the teachings of the church on face value and the purity of intention of those who teach it.
  2. i had the house to myself all day yesterday so i had a regular dvd-fest. first i watched season 1 of twin peaks. i'd never seen it before - i'm totally hooked so i'm watching season 2 online! then i watched 'hable con ella' (talk to her), an almodóvar movie about two men who strike up a friendship while the women they love are in comas. a really excellent movie but totally messed up. after that i watched some classic hitchcock, 'shadow of a doubt' made in 1943 about a girl whose uncle comes to visit leading to some startling discoveries. hitchcock often said this was his favourite movie. this was excellent too. the acting was brilliant and obviously hitchcock creates a really eerie atmosphere. teresa swift who played the girl is the image of my younger cousin, beautiful! the most messed up of all was next: 'the rules of attraction'. it's a very good movie with some interesting narrative techniques, although the backwards/forwards stuff was slightly overdone in my view. it's based on a novel by brett easton ellis, who also wrote 'american psycho' so it's suitably messed up! it was pretty disturbing but i suppose nothing i hadn't seen or imagined before. james van der beek certainly does his best to cast off the sickly-sweet dawson image with his portrayal of sean bateman, the infamous patrick's younger brother. i couldn't go to bed having just watched the last one so i watched 'the prince of tides' which was on tv. i really enjoyed it. barbra streisand and nick nolte were great in it. it was a very powerful and moving drama and explored alot of difficult themes. overall it was a very good day and night's movie watching but i finished up pretty much feeling like i can never trust men again!
  3. s/s just finished the first season of twin peaks on dvd and is totally hooked!!!
  4. wow, peaches, that is some crazy talk! but i looooove mariyln and i'm attracted to clothes that fit in with her sense of style!
  5. online there are music credits for flute on 'the fool on the hill' but then my sources could be wrong!!
  6. AAAARGH i just spent ages composing my list and then there was problem loading the page so it's gone! grrr! anyway, i've been hiding from this page because i've been so shy of all the nice images people have of me! my favourite is gwen stefani cos she's cool and fiesty! the most surprising was hayley mills since i'm a bit older than her in 'the parent trap'!! but she's really pretty too - it's all been ridiculously flattering! i'm nowhere near as pretty as lisa hannigan, or any of them for that matter! here's my tentative list, although i'm sure i'll forget some people! das: michael bluth - phwoar! peaches: catherine zeta jones but curvier and fiestier! shawna: jamie lee curtie with long hair and a fringer (bangs) - hot! laurie: joan baez - long flowing hair and amazing cheekbones. jane: very similar to laurie actually! edna: penelope cruz or audrey tatou - teeny tiny with sallow skin, dark hair and eyes. radhika: shilpa shetty - tall, graceful with beautiful hair, skin and eyes b-f: i can see morrissey or maybe ian curtis - dark hair, striking looking with a slight cynical snarl fintan: a younger slimmer matt damon uncle joe: sean connery, bill murray or a taller robert de niro with a salt n' pepa stubbly beard diggs: a cross between john lennon and tim buckley - quietly handsome with nice hair elvish: kate bush with long light brown hair, great cheekbones and pale-ish skin jenny: sandra bullock but with shorter, thicker hair ryansgirl: anna faris with glasses s2v: a younger harrison ford - goodlooking but serious and contemplative farin: daniel bruehl from 'goodbye lenin', probably because he's german!! kevin: kevin spacey, not cos of the first name but because i could see kevin spacey living in japan and being just a little bit crazy! sammy: shaft! mindcrime: a cross between nick cave and mark lanegan marc: bruce willis or russell crowe with a shaved head
  7. oh my god peachy, your little one has gotten so grown up since the last photo i saw!! both are really gorgeous little girls!
  8. it's funny you use that expression, since balls exist purely to keep their content at a temperature lower than body temp!
  9. so sorry i missed your birthday, das. i hope you had a gorgeous day and i know you have a great family trip ahead for the weekend - enjoy! much love-xo
  10. ooh ooh any of the johnny cash covers, especially 'hurt' originially by nine inch nails!! so moving!
  11. you'd think it wouldn't be that hard to arrange it, but no! by taking up the job after the postal deadline had passed, i gave up my vote, something which they ngected to tell me when they offered me the job. it would be so easy to arrange it but they just won't - so frustrating! ggrrr!
  12. i applied for a job as poll clerk because we have a general election tomorrow. i got the call on monday to fill in as a last minute replacement and the form arrived on tuesday, telling me that i have to stay in the polling booth building from 7am until 10.30pm when the polls close. of course, requiring people to work these hours is pretty illegal but i'm happy to do it in the name of democracy and for an ample fee! however, it crossed my mind yesterday that this doesn't give me the opportunity to cast my own vote. so i just rang to enquire and it turns out that by accepting the position at late notice i have missed the chance to send in a postal vote so i've lost my vote! i'm seriously considering giving up the money to exercise my right to vote but i don't want to leave them down at the last minute. this is ridiculous! ireland is a first world country stuck in second world administration standards. grrrrr!
  13. oh peaches, you are the funniest!
  14. an irish girl called paula flynn just brought out a cover of bowie's 'let's dance' which is pretty cool, if a little derivative of novelle vague! she has a myspace page where you can hear a clip of it!
  15. it must a bit of a pain to have a name that's been in a really famous song like that! i suppose it would be okay if it's a cool song, like 'layla' or 'alison' or 'polly' or 'sexy sadie'. but what if you're not so lucky and it's something totally naff like 'mandy' or 'cecilia'. i'm always singing 'michelle' to my sister-in-law, she doesn't seem to mind! there are two songs called 'gisela', one by a rubbishy spanish popstar and one by a german heavy metal band - thankfully neither have become in any way well known amongst people i know! funnily enough, i woke up today with 'rosanna' in my head. i like that name!
  16. ^ nothing as exciting as yours edna but i found a piece of writing i'd done. and my brothers were on for some awards and things they'd gotten. my mother wasn't on there herself but she shares her name with a romantic novelist! < however, if you go onto google images and type in 'gisela ucc' you get a picture of me! v how about you? and claims to google fame?
  17. exactly, from what i can see, now it's just a question of a) how long you've been there and where you came from originally!
  18. apparently that album was called 'virgin killer' - pretty sick rather than risqué, i'd say! john and yoko being nekkid on the cover of 'unfinished music no.1: two virgins' was pretty risqué. which reminds me of this scene from the simpsons: 'no.8 no.8 no.8 no.8...'
  19. but millions of cars are still vrooming.
  20. SMELL THE GLOVE, SMELL THE GLOVE!!!
  21. "lovely rita, meter maid, nothing can come between us..."
  22. granted. you have your fully stocked mini-fridge along with a minion to restock it. however, you've been lazy, obese and bedridden. i wish my friends would make a bit more of an effort to stay in touch!
  23. i definitely think of the beatles when i think of the flute in rock music - 'the fool on the hill', 'strawberry fields', and there are definitely flutes aplenty on 'sgt pepper's'. somewhat by extension, since oasis areso heavily influence by the beatles, i seem to remember there's a track off 'standing on the shoulders of giants' which has some very beatlesesque flutes on it!
  24. granted, but you've been run over by a drunk-driving michelle rodriguez! i wish i could be beamed up to bed every night, instead of going through the whole rigmarole of getting a hot water bottle and a glass of water, going upstairs, brushing my teeth, getting changed, getting into bed.... yawn!
  25. 'babel' i watched it with my mum and two of my brothers, one of whom was just off a night on call in the hospital so he was very tired. i would have preferred to have watched it on my own (how very introverted of me) because they were slightly impatient which affected my enjoyment of the movie. i thought it was very good. beautifully shot, excellent acting. the links between the stories were a little tenuous but interesting nonetheless. it really captured the feelings of the protagonists so well - desperation, fear, loneliness. in particular, i had never seen the theme of the isolation of a deaf-mute person dealt with onscreen and i thought it was done very effectively in this movie. i would recommend this film, although, while i personally didn't, some people might find it a little on the long side. overall, a good day for film-watching for me!
