  1. Hey guys, I was working the other day and K-Rock, our local classic rock station was blaring as per usual. There was a mind bendingly cool chunky guitar driven hard rock song on. And I didn't know it. When the song ended the DJ mentioned it was Boston. Now I consider myself a fan of classic music, I try to listen to as much as possible. But I'm very new to Boston. If there are some fans here, I'm trying to put together a definetive collection to introduce myself. Any help would be appreciated.
  2. Yeah, I have to say Dire Straits as well. When I was a kid I gripped "Brothers in Arms" from my parents record collection and used to sit in my room under the blankets on my bed and listen to it over and over with the lights off. It was just so lush, and his voice had so much pang to it. Guitar playing was out of this world. REM were definetly an important band in the post punk 80's underground movement. But songwriting wise, I thikn Knopfler trumps them.
  3. That's the newest one. I like it, they're on their own record label. In their own studio, total do-it-yourselfers. It's kind of funny becaue that's how I first got into ween, I found "GodweenSatan" at the library. Give it a listen, post what you think.
  4. That is exactly what I do. If someone asks me describe a bands sound, I categorize it and then say what bands could go together to make the sound. Its the easiest way to explain it. But the genre labeling is getting out of control man. Every new band seems to be getting its own unique label. If record stores followed it, there'd be more sections for bands, than bands.
  5. "White Pepper" is their most accesible record. Very well produced and less odd ball, but if you want to get right into the thick of things "The Mollusk" is a great collection. Really showcases their 'inividuality'.
  6. It sells well enough, so there has to be something to it. Garth Brooks has 4 albums certified Diamond, which is just above the Eagles. Tha many people can't be wrong can they? Then again, the masses also buy Britney Spears records. So I retract my previous statment.
  7. "There is no Goth" - Little Bald headed kid. "Whoa" - Keyaunu Reeves
  8. I guess I'm a little late on this whole thing, but I had to register my opinion about the film. I attended the opening night show. 12:00 midnight, the first showing in the city, I had my tickets purchased for me by an enthusiastic friend who insisted I come in full costume, 6 hours early to wait for a good spot. Let me start by saying, I'm not a fan of the star wars films. I've seen them all, many times. Watched for the bloopers and all that when I was a kid. But as I grew older I realized that the dialougue was for [bleep], the acting piss poor and the entire mythos of the series was built by over zealous nerds in the 80s. It was not intened to be as grand as it turned out to be. So I call with car trouble, saying I won't be able to come wait in line because of it. I show up around thirty minutes to show time and take advantage of my friends zest for the series and join him in line. Many a scathing wookie sounds and angry lightsabre noises were tossed my way for this manouver. I was mainly there to witness the cultural event of the year. There were thousands of people, all clad in robes, storm-trooper gear and insanely detailed alien make-up, exchanging stories about how Star Wars affected them and correcting one another on missed sylables in quotes. Attack of the clones was a boring, horribly written love story, bumbled by wooden dialouge and terrible pacing. "The Phantom Menace" was a glorified Disney movie, too juvenile to be taken seriously. It made the muppet filled "Return of the Jedi" look like "Rambo". So I wasn't exactly expecting a miracle. "Revenge of the Sith" is not without its good points. There are some terrific action sequences and it is no doubt darker then the last 2 movies, but the same problems still plague it: Acting Writing F...ok so I just want to use the AWFUL acronym! Unbelievable character development Lack of real human element I don't want to give anything away because this thing is gigantic for alot of people, like my friend who cried the whole way home "It's over!!!". Its gonna be terrible when this guy loses a parent. evenge of the Sith is a mediocre movie with great special effects. If you aren't too invested in the series, you can pass it up. But we all know you're gonna see it. This thing is going to make more money then we could ever possibly hope to see. So as I sit here at my computer sipping my Darth vader slurpee in my Wookie underoos (itchy) and Yoda-head slippers...I lost my point. I'm going to bed, those Ewok bedsheets are calling my name. -The Coz
  9. Smith can't keep a band together to save his life. And after the great comeback album. I see bad things on the horizon for the Cure. I wish he'd just change the name to "The Robert Smith Project" or something.
  10. I just got it. I'll give you guys a review once I give it a once through.
  11. OMG!!! Jman, I was totally gonna say Yngwie, but I thought I'd get some flak for sayiing it! Thank you! You have validated me!
  12. Ha, no not at all. Ween are a couple of guys Dean and Gene Ween (not their real names. They are master musicians who do EVERY style. From metal to punk to raggae, on every album. But with oddball lyrics and tones. I think they're brilliant, they've had a record deal since they were 14! Alot of people don't know them, I just wanted to see how many people here knew 'em.
  13. "Afraid of me" is a killer Twiztid track. Same with ICP's "Come and Play with me" and "Echoside". Sorry for calling you a man. I was unclear on that. And I applaud the fact that you defend your favorite group so much. My favorite band is GWAR. So I know what its like having people think you're dim because of your musical taste. Glad we got that all cleared up.
  14. Well, the early 90s were full of Tecnho/rap acts. 2 Unlimited, Technotronic, Dee-Lite all had those rappers with the REALLY deep voices rhyming about sweat, and how they'd make it come out of you in buckets. *shudders* I am so glad that fad ended. But as far as Trance and House, I'm not a big fan. If one crosses over into the Mainstream like "Sandstorm" or "Children" I'll listen to it, but I don't seek it out. But Electronic music as a whole isn't without merit (merrit? Frig, how do you spell that?). Moby, Fatboy Slim, Crystal Method, Prodigy are all great Break Beat bands. Though break beat has more in common with traditional rock structure then Trance. And there's Trip Hop, which is an amazing genre. Massive Attack, Faithless, Poe, Portishead Morcheeba. Cool Electronic Film Noir stuff. Can't go wrong there.
  15. Hahaha, I suppose in a way music is pretty self serving. But I just think certain albums are the artists just saying "Look how f'ing good I am at this!" Could just be me. I meant no offense by it. I still love Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. But not Buckethead. haha
  16. Haha, yeah for sure! Funkadelic are amazing! In the immortal words of Rick James "Cocaine is helluva drug". "Grooveallegiance" is my favorite on the album.
  17. Hey man, don't get me wrong, I know plenty about ICP. They took over my entire life when "The amazing Jekyl Brothers" came out. And I loved the surprise twist at the end of Shangri-la. I just don't honestly see ho anyone could take them seriously enough to consider them anything more then a gimmick. I mean, The Neden game was funny, and Rainbows n' stuff was pretty good. It's just...whe nyou have a song calle "Bugs on my Nuts" that actually has the line: "well I don't understand the phemonenon, we f**king these hoes that look like Splalabitah" (no typo's)
  18. Funkadelic - promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (doo doo Chasers) 31 letters, I think....it's hard to count
  19. Ok, Gothic music is NOT meaningless. The late 70s and early 80s are full of competent and capable bands. Goth developped from post-punk. Bands like Joy Division, Bauhaus and Incubus Succubus. Echoey, dark and brooding. Plus the stories behind the bands are always interesting. As for the Cure. I don't think they're goth, I saw Dark Wave thrown out there, thats a good way to classify them. Honestly though, they were just a post-punk band that goth fans latched onto. I think it mostly has to do with the image and sound of Robert Smith. But if you want proof of their goth leanings check out "Pornography" an epic album.
  20. Hey guys, new to the board and liking it so far. I was just wondering what everyones thoughts were on Ween. Multitalented musicians who don't care what anyone thinks. I applaud anyone who does their own thing. Hell it's why I like Van Morrison so much. But Ween's sarcastic take on EVERY musical genre is absolutely amazing. Discuss.
  21. The insane clown posse. That's their name. Come on.
  22. Alot of Prog rock is egotistical, self serving bullshit. Dragging the same idea out over 12 minutes with minor changes. Though there is some truly inspired stuff out there. Stuff like Steve Vai, Satriani and Liquid Tension Experiment serve to showcase the technical prowess of the players. Not much more then 74 minutes of personal advertising space. But bands like King Crimson, Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, The Mars Volta and Yes have sprawling epics with complete feels and concepts. Sometimes an epic is just what you need.

    ac/dc

I'll definetly agree that Bon was a better singer. Brian kind of took the band in a different direction. I'd say they would have been just as big. What AC/DC had going for them was they were unchallenged in their homeland. Get enough attention as the biggest rock band in your country, and worldwide attention is sure to follow.
  24. I've seen "Tommy" mentioned alot. And I whole heartedly agree with that. That was the era of the great concept albums. Although certain bands are bringing it back with a vengeance. "The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium" This album is the story of one of the band members overdosing on drugs. And what he may have seen or experienced leading up to his death. Insanely fleshed out and punchy, with labrynth compositions through audio madness. "Mastadon - Leviathan" Metal, with a capital "M". These guys are well respected in the community, and the concept of this album: Moby Dick. And the recent concept album most liekly to be turned into a stage show or musical to milk the fans: Green Day's "American Idiot". I know it's not as technically proficient as some of the classics, but there is some charm to a 12 minute pop-punk track. Plus, they totally pulled it off live.
