  1. It was innovative for it's time. Zeppelin was huge, then they had this huge album, almost instantly, it was one of those albums that every song was a good song. A great song, in fact. And Stairway to Heaven was the centerpiece. You had to be there. Sorry, but it's the truth. You just had to be there, when it was happening. In that time, in that place. That's the best explanation I can give. And, the Cyberkitty is right. The solo. Put on the headphones, and when it gets to the solo, listen to just the guitar, nothing else. It's a masterpiece.
  2. I'm not just another pretty face , you know. I'm just messing with you, pinky. I don't know about love at a young age. I believe one may have different feelings that they've never experienced before, and may think it's love, simply because they have no other feeling like that to compare it to. The first time you look at someone, and notice things you never noticed before, and those things become important, because they make you feel good. Then you start to actually look for those things, and feel a certain amount of gratification, or pleasure from those things. In your case, being a young girl, you see a guy who suits your fancy, and your insides feel funny, like never before, well, it must be love, right? Always heard about it, so this must be it. I suppose, to a degree, it is love. I'm no expert, but my feeling is, to be in love for real,to understand it's value, and it's importance, one must have their heart broken first. that doesn't hld true for everyone, of course. Some folks get lucky, fall in love in high school, and are happy their entire life with that person. In a nutshell, pinky, it's a crapshoot. You'll think you are when you're not, and you'll think you're not, and realize you are. Settle in, young one. Welcome to Songfacts. I'm jr. Check you ego and your vanity at the door. You get no points for style in here. And until you get 500 posts, you have to take everyone's lunch trays up.
  3. Stairway to Heaven is a great song, it's just been beaten to death. Driving in the car in 1979, "Cool, Stairway! Turn it up, Dude!" Driving in the car in 2004, "Oh, man, Stairway, turn the station" It's just the sheer repetition of it. Now, I haven't heard it in a long time, so if I were to grab the cd and stick it in with the headphones on, surely, that's a whole different story. The whole 'what's old is new' thing. By the way, I'm jr. Welcome to Songfacts. We have Hawaiian shirt Fridays and Topless Tuesdays. Cookout every Daytona 500, rain , snow, or shine.
  4. At least Stairway to Heaven isn't in the top ten.
  5. "Workin' on mysteries without any clues, workin' on the night moves" That's always been one of my favorites. It's a wonderfully compact statement about what teens go through when discovering the opposite sex.
  6. I know the Chesterfields did a song called No Turning Back, but I think they're from the 80's Russ Ballard did one called Ain't No Turning Back, but that was waaaayyyy back. I want to say the Buckinghams did one, as well, but I'm not sure.
  7. This is great. I didn't take into account the time zones. Now I never have to post in this thread again. I can just soak up the knowledge. To steal a line from Scott....Schweet.
  8. Can you cut someone with a spork? Admit it, CD, that was funny.
  9. Chris Waters hits one out of the park. Fast food...why don't you just take a syringe and shoot the poison straight into your arm? Quicker that way.
  10. Alright, this is the Irony Police. Place your hands in the air, and step away from the keyboard!
  11. I agree, Elvy. The thing about the change in music when hair metal died out, was that it didn't evolve, it completely jumped track. It was anti-hair band. It went from pretty, sleek, catchy metal, to, well, grunge. A complete 180. That's why none of those metal bands stayed around. Grunge didn't evolve from it, grunge killed it. Up until then, rock music in general had been a steady evolution since the sixties. The British invasion spawned Aerosmith, Grand Funk, Doobs, Fleetwood Mac,etc, all the bands that arose from the late sixties-early seventies. And those bands, in turn, influenced the likes of Van Halen, Foreigner, and the like, that showed up in the mid-seventies. Then disco and punk made some waves, but rock, while not in the forefront of the music scene at that time, still sold out arenas. Let me pause here and say one thing: Rock never went away. It was always enjoyed a huge fan base. Disco and punk had brief, unbeleiveably successful runs, but no staying power. Anyway, from those bands of the mid to late 70's,the early 80's saw the birth of what would become hair metal, with Motley Crue's 'Shout at the Devil'. Once they hit it big, there was a feeding frenzy of L.A. Bands getting signed. In a matter of maybe, 4-5 years, it was tapped out. Cookie cutter interchangeable bands. I think people were just tired at that point. The young kids were getting the residue of something that had been played out, and when grunge popped up, they latcthed onto it. Completely abandoned hair metal, and rightly so. There was nothing left there, anyway. If they had had something to say, kids would have listened. Only recently, these bands have resurfaced, 15 years later, with tours and whatnot. But they aren't selling out anything, even semi-sized clubs, and they're touring in packs to draw crowds. It's merely a nostalgic thing.
  12. Eddie Van Halen played lead on Beat It. That's old news, though. Welcome to Songfacts. I'm Jr. My specialty is 70's one hit wonders, and 70's chart music in general. We have several experts different fields here. XXX knows all about music I've never heard of. Bluesboy is a true music historian, and our resident stoic. HDThoreau loves The Boss and Neil Young. There are a ton of younger posters who can tell you about newer music. Earth Angel, Soulgirl, Scott, RogerWaters, Gillianne, Elvish, Annabelle, they all know their stuff. windy1 has the Stones covered. All in all, everyone takes a turn being the village idiot. Carl and Sara rule the roost. They swat us with a paper when we need it. Well?.....don't just stand there with the door open....heat costs money, you know!
  13. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas ~ Judy Garland Silver Bells ~ Bing Crosby Chesnuts Roasting on an Open Fire ~ Nat King Cole Sorry, I only know old Christmas songs. Heck, who am I kidding..I only know old songs, period.
  14. This can only get worse. Why don't we nip it right now? NIP IT, NIP IT, NIP IT!!!
  15. Excellent topic, Bluesy. I like a lot of Willie's stuff, but my favorite has always been, and always will be, "Always on My Mind". It's a beautifully painful song anyay, but Willie gives it that extra little stab. Anybody know what I'm talking about?
  16. Dances with Wolves is the first movie my wife and I saw together. Not our first date, but our first movies.
