Mike from San Jose, CA

The tiebreaker question asked how many days after Christmas we took down the Songfacts tree. Mike from San Jose was closest by far, with a guess of 64. We tend to leave the tree up until it starts shedding, and this one held its needles quite well.

Here are the answers:
  • What famous musician once changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol?
    - Prince

  • What famous British band's first 3 albums had titles that were not in English?
    - The Police
Outlandos D'Amour, Reggatta De Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta

  • What famous singer changed his name so he wouldn't be confused with a boxer?
    - Ray Charles
He was born Ray Robinson, and changed to because of boxer Sugar Ray Robinson.

  • What word is the last name of a '50s Soul singer, the first word of an '80s Rock band, the last word of a '60s Rock band and the title of a hit song?
    - Faith
Percy Faith, Faith No More, Blind Faith, "Faith" by George Michael.
I thought of this question after pulling up info on Percy Faith in our database by doing a search for "Faith." Guesses included: Domino, Rush, James, Green, Brown.

  • What US #1 hit mentions James Dean in the lyrics?
    - "American Pie" by Don McLean
Sometimes we'll throw out a question knowing there might be other valid answers. In this case, there were 2 others - "Jack And Diane" by John Mellencamp and "Rock On," which was a #1 hit when Michael Damien covered it. "Vogue" was awfully close, but Madonna says "Jimmy Dean," which is actually a maker of sausage. "We Didn't Start The Fire" also mentions James Dean, but it wasn't a #1 hit.

  • What famous group's first single was a cover of a song originally recorded by Dutch group The Shocking Blue?
    - Nirvana
Their first single was a cover of "Love Buzz."
Just about everyone fell into the Bananarama trap (did you really think we'd use them 2 quizzes in a row?). Bananarama did a well known cover of "Venus," which is the most famous song by The Shocking Blue, but it wasn't their first single (I didn't check the discography, but I know "Cruel Summer" was earlier). This is one of those questions that you are much more likely to answer correctly if you were born after 1980.

  • What hit from the '60s is about a boy with a girl's name?
    - "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash

  • What Beatles song has a title that was used for the name of a character in a popular 2000 movie?
    - "Penny Lane"
Kate Hudson played a character of that name in Almost Famous.
  • What song is about an Arab ruler who bans music, but is defied by his people who play it anyway?
    - "Rock The Casbah" by The Clash

  • What popular song mentions catfish, Mississippi and Dixieland?
    - "Black Water" by The Doobie Brothers

Thanks to everyone who took the quiz, and be sure to take the new one

Well at least I got 9 out of 10. Tough tie-breaker!

I knew that Bananarama wasn't right but it's all I could come up with.
Have you tried attacking him with your melodrama? Cos it's killing me!

You know, leaving a Christmas tree up past January 6th, it immediately becomes a fire hazard (remember that next year). F**k Bananarama. I, too, knew it wasn't Bananarama but I couldn't think of anything else, so then....F**k Nirvana, too.

This month's quiz is much, much tougher.

This one's is tougher. I know one for sure, have an idea on a few others.

The rap one, I'm going to have to look for. I don't know the name of a single rap song........which is nice.

In the words of the great Billy Madison: "I am the smartest (wo)man alive!" I have Bananarama's Greatest Hits and missed the Bananarama question last quiz, but I did NOT fall into the Bananarama trap again!
