Here are the results for this month's quiz:

We had 2 entrants that got all 10 answers correct but both are ineligible for the t-shirt as our 6 month period between wins has not passed yet for either.
They do get bragging rights for geting 100%, though.

They were:
Billy from Leesburg, GA (previously won the May 2009 quiz)
Joseph from Morgantown, VA (previously won the Jun. 2009 quiz)

That brings us to the 2 entrants that got 9 out of 10 correct:
Clinton from Cape Town, South Africa
Shawn from Georgetown, OH

Shawn from Georgetown, OH was closest on the tie-breaking question and will receive this month's cool-to-wear-anywhere SongFacts t-shirt.

Here are a couple of notes followed by the answers:

*Note on Question # 3: The question asks for a duo.
A duo is 2 people who perform and record together as a unit.
Songs that were recorded by 2 people who get together for a specific recording only are considered a duet and would not qualify as a correct answer.

*Note on Question # 8: The question was designed to make you put on your thinking caps and do some research to find out who had a total of 3 Top 10 hits in the 90's.
Prince did not qualify as a correct answer because he had 5 U.S. Top 10 hits during the 90's, not 3.
The question specifically asks for a singer who had 3 U.S. Top 10 hits, it doesn't ask for a singer who had "at least" 3 Top 10 hits.

Well, I must say that I'm extremely disappointed.

For #3, we had Madonna/Justin Timberlake (for the song "Four Minutes"). A duo is defined as a pair. Look it up in any dictionary. For instance, "What duo sang Ebony and Ivory" would not be a trick question, now would it? I can understand differentiating between "singer" and "band", but I think defining a duo strictly as two people who routinely record together is a very long stretch at best. Would you not say that Allison Krauss and Robert Plant were recently an unlikely duo? I think you would, and by definition that made them, for one album, a duo.

Additionally, your explanation of why our answer was wrong also defines two people who get together for a single song as a duet. This is incorrect. The SONG would be a duet. The parties involved would be a duo.

For #8, we had Prince. Prince only had three top 10 singles in the 90s. The Artist Formerly Known As Prince had two more, but that was arguably, and for all legal purposes, an entirely separate entity. It was on this fact that we based our answer. The way things have gone lately, if you had asked for five top 10s and we had said Prince, you would have said we were wrong because technically, "The Artist" had two of them, while Prince only had three. It seems we're spending more time trying to figure out how you will interpret an answer than on coming up with the actual answer.

If given credit for these two answers, we would have had a perfect score (again!). Don't get me wrong; I do appreciate all the hard work you guys do for no reward other than the love of music and this site, but at least for now, I have lost all motivation to even continue working on the current set of questions as it seems this is turning more into a battle over semantics than a trivia quiz.

Thanks for listening,

Walt

I'm sorry that you feel that way, Walt.

It's impossible to please everybody no matter which way we look at a question.
There will always be someone on opposite sides with different views.
While you and others will argue that Prince should be a correct answer, others will argue that it should not be.
While you and others may look at 2 people recording a song together as performing as a duo, myself and others will argue that they are recording a duet together.

When you're a solo artist, the fact that you have musicians play on your recordings and accompany you for concerts doesn't make you a band, you're still considered a solo artist.
So, if you have another solo artist join you for a song, how does that change your status as a solo artist and now make you a duo?
They recorded one song together and went their own ways.
Featuring someone on one of your songs does not make you a recording duo.
You're collaborating for a duet.

Some may say it's a single by Madonna and features Justin.
Some may say it's a duo by Madonna and Justin.
Some may say it's a duet by Madonna and Justin.

The song is released on Madonna's album 'Hard Candy'.
The single's cover shows Madonna and Justin.
Billboard registers the song as "Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake".
The song also features Timbaland on background vocals.

Take a look at all of the answers currently for question # 3.
They are unarguably duos. They record and perform as such.

Let's talk about Prince.
The fact that he used his name along with either 'The Revolution' or 'The New Power Generation' at different times during his career doesn't change the fact that he is a male singer who uses just one name.
Yes, you can argue the time that he was known as that unpronouncable symbol and was refered to as "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" or "The Artist" should not count because he actually didn't use one name.
Someone else may come along and argue that it does because he still is a person who uses one name and it still was him that had that hit song in the 90's.

If we go by your criteria, Prince would still not qualify as a correct answer.
Songs from the 90's that made the Top 10 are as follows:

#6 1990 "Thieves In The Temple" (released as by Prince)
#1 1991 "Cream" (released as by Prince And The New Power Generation)
#3 1992 "Diamonds And Pearls" (released as by Prince And The New Power Generation)
#7 1993 "7" (released as by Prince And The New Power Generation)
#3 1994 "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" (released as by 'combination of male/female symbol that he used at the time')

Only the song from 1994 was released as 'by that symbol' that he used.
The song from 1993 was released before he changed his name to the "love" symbol (which was on 6/7/93).

So, if we don't count the song from 1994, that would still make him an incorrect answer with 4 Top 10 hits during the 90's.

What it boils down to, is this:
We must have some guidelines and certain criteria for the quiz.
We welcome suggestions and comments.
At times, we may add a correct answer that we missed or retract an incorrect answer that we listed.

There can be different views about questions and we must decide on just one or accept all.
We usually go with the way we originally intended the question but sometimes we will change it.
The point is, not everyone may be satisfied with our decision to accept or not accept an answer as correct.

Most quizzes on the internet only allow you to take the quiz and you must accept the results without ever being able to question an answer.
We allow you to voice any questions or comments you may have and allow discussion from either side.

I understand your frustration and I wish we could please everyone when a question arises.
I hope that you will continue entering the quiz each month.
I'm sure it's fun and challenging for you as it is for us.
You are one of our best entrants.
You'd be surprised at how many people only answer the questions that they know already and don't have or take the time to search for answers so thoroughly like you and your friends do.

We also learn a lot from entrants each month.
Sometimes we only have 1 answer to a question and checking up on someone's answer that is different from ours broadens our knowledge of music.
