This pretty much seems to be the theme for about every forth country song ever written, one good recent one is:
"Everytime I Hear Your Name" KEITH ANDERSON

In pop/rock one of my all-time favorites is:
"Almost Blue" ELVIS COSTELLO

from Imperial Bedroom "...there's a girl here and she's almost you ... almost."

The Cars *laughing loudly*
That song does bring back some ..ehh.. memories. Massivly popular, new-waveish and all...
But wasn't the guy in this song not with somebody else, but, ultimately, alone?
Empty-handed, his best friend had the girl he wanted, and wasnt he ..err.. left to his own devices?

I never really paid attention to music by Howard Jones, but "No One Is To Blame" sounds a little bit like it fits the theme (although not explicitly stating it).

I just like the piano bit from the song... the instrumentation sounds like Phil Collins mixed with John Cougar Mellencamp hahah

I don't know where the Johnny Cougar bit comes from, but you really can't blame Phil for sounding like Phil ;-)

Not necessarily "empty-handed", then, in the strictest sense of the word?
My grandad gave me some sound advice on his death-bed. "It's worth spending a bit extra for good quality speakers", he told me.

All I Want is You - U2

I listen to this song whenever I can't hold back my feelings...

I hope these are the kind of songs you're looking for:

Imogen Heap - Goodnight and Go

Damien Rice - 9 Crimes (one of my favorites)

Kenny Rogers - Daytime Friends and Nighttime Lovers

If you like Stay by Sugarland you might like Stay With Me (Brass Bed) By Josh Gracin too

Thats all I can think of at the moment..

Been Here Before by Terrible Things

"You can hide it, when we're talking
But the silence kills.
We're pretending, but you're remembering
How it used to feel.

You've been here before
I can see it on your face.
You've been here before
And nobody's going to take his place
And though I want you, you're holding back.
I'll wait, just waiting, babe, for you."

Cath... by Death Cab for Cutie

"Cath, it seems
That you live in someone else's dreams.
In a hand-me-down wedding dress
With the things that could've been
All repressed.

But you said your vows
And you closed the door
On so many men
Who would have loved you more.

Soon everybody will ask
What became of you
'Cause your heart was dying fast
And you didn't know what to do."
