Rock List: The Fifty Best Songs Over Seven Minutes Long

About one and a half years ago, Rolling Stone came up with a non-ranked list of the 50 best songs that are over the 7 minute mark, based on fans and editors votes.

I would have put November Rain on instead of Estranged by GnR, but Estranged is worthy of a placement.

Fade to Black by Metallica misses the list by 4 seconds, but One is still a good choice for that band.

Riders on the Storm is the Doors best long song, IMO. Much better than the End, which was dismissed as one of the worst ever in history on another list.

I'm surprised that Stairway to Heaven didn't make the cut, but I guess this list is limited to just one song per artist.

I agree with the previous comment about Sheep over Dogs by Floyd.

OK. How about American Pie by Don McLean? At 8:22, the longest song to hit #1 on the US chart, and one of the most classic songs of all time. And if there is a question whether it is considered "rock", it certainly is more of a rock song than Prince's "Purple Rain" or Justin's "What Goes Around Comes Around".

I think "Rock List" is just the name of the feature and not what genre the songs had to be in because Purple Rain and What Goes Around Comes Around (and I love that song) aren't rock songs.....it seems that there are quite a few songs on there I wouldn't call rock.

"Time" -the Walker brothers

"Light my fire"- The Doors (long version)

Anything from "Animals"-Pink Floyd (except "Birds on a wing")

And I think "Bridge over troubled waters" might have been over 7 minutes...

 to "maggot brain" that's a great pick

I notice there is only one song per artist, which I think is a fair way to do it.

Naturally, being a prog-rocker, I do not like this list. The lack of Jethro Tull (I just so happen to be listening to the eight and a half minute Pibroch right now - amazing song), Genesis and ELP is inexcusable.

At least they included King Crimson.

I would have included, from the above and other bands:

Minstrel In The Gallery - Jethro Tull (or My God, Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play, Baker Street Muse, Pibroch (Cap In Hand), Dark Ages... the list goes on and on)

Firth Of Fifth - Genesis

Karn Evil 9 - ELP

Man-Erg - Van Der Graaf Generator

Nine Feet Underground - Caravan

Telegraph Road - Dire Straits

The Dead Flag Blues - Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Child In Time - Deep Purple

Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys - Traffic (I know lots of people here will agree with me on this one)

I was gonna respond with something like this, but now I don't need to.

I like to see Willie the Pimp there though :)

One of my personal favorites as far as long songs go is "Take A Pebble" by ELP. I guess you would have to be a major fan ( like me :D ) to really enjoy all the intricacies tho.

I personally think that song really brings out the true talent of each of the band members.

Keith Emerson is still considered one of the best keyboardist in the world, Carl Palmer is a world class drummer to this day and Greg Lake in his prime could hold his own as a very good vocalist. His Bass and guitar playing could never be compared to any of the greats out there, but his lyrics and vocals were out standing. True he did write a lot of the lyrics with Fripp (King Crimson) but I'd say he is still top rate :D

how many albums can you say the closer is the best song on there?

Nirvana's Nevermind with Something in the Way, if you don't count the hidden track at the end.

There's a few lesser-known albums also, including Dirt by Alice in Chains.

and if they let The Stones have another, but

You Can't Always Get What You Want

7:30

I think this one deserved a spot too.

I also would have put Dylan's "Hurricane" on the list over "Sad-Eyed Lady..."

And I agree with "When the Levee Breaks" being included since its my favourite Zeppelin song but I'm a little surprised they chose it over "Stairway" or "Kashmir".

It's very hard to choose the best Led Zeppelin song over 7 minutes. My favourites are:

1. The Rain Song

2. Kashmir

3. No Quarter

4. Stairway To Heaven

5. When The Levee Breaks

6. Achilles Last Stand

7. Since I've Been Loving You

8. In My Time Of Dying

9. In The Light

10. How Many More Times
